“brawl” at the grill

Situation:
Currently working my miserable summer job at the grill. I hate this job, but it has been reliable income between the semesters.

Incident:
I don’t wanna offend anyone, but man did one guy put me through hell today. The guy first came up and asked me if our beef is halal and since I don’t have the slightest clue, I yelled for my supervisor. The guy ordered the triple decker with fries, so I started whipping it up.

Clip clap clop, the guy’s meal was ready. I handed it over to him. Naturally, there’s a knife in the middle of the burger since it’s a triple layer one. He suddenly gave me the stare of a lunatic and asked me if the knife is halal. Since I have no clue what halal utensils are, I called for my supervisor again. This time, even my supervisor had no clue and excused himself to tend to other matters. The guy muttered “I’m coming for you and your family if the knife isn’t halal”, followed by him taking a seat, pulling the knife out and eating the burger with his hands.

Just making it clear, I’m not a racist in any way or form. I just want to earn some cash to fund my studies, but this incident has really discouraged me. Why do some people have to make life difficult when it is already difficult enough as is?

I am a Muslim, a rather conservative one when it comes to certain teachings (food being one of them), and I agree, this is ridiculous.

If I wasn't sure the beef is halal, I would simply go for a vegan or seafood option and call it a day (assuming you got them). I understand it's too much hassle for you or the supervisor to figure out these things and I am not willing to be ridiculously demanding. Maybe if I will be a regular customer I will have the vegan option until I get a confirmation from you that the beef is halal.

I know some people love beef, but if I was worried the beef is not halal, I would restrain myself from indulging into thinking about how lovely beef tastes and head the other direction.

If said guy has ordered the beef and not sure it is halal, because he didn't want to control his urge, and then he goes on to threaten you with a knife if the beef turned out non-halal, these are screwed up priorities.

I hate judging people but it seems he is threatening you to feel less guilty about his decision to eat the beef without being sure he can actually have it. You didn't do anything wrong. You can face him off with this. Resisting the urge to have the beef and choosing the vegan option is itself a form of Jihad, in my opinion.

OP, I am terrible at articulation, and if something doesn't make sense feel free to get back to me.

    • Thanks for the clarification!

Unfortunately there are bad apples in every culture. They are often the people who make themselves most heard based on their actions, but they are only a minority and it is important to remember that the vast majority of people in every culture are nice and friendly.

Yesterday’s incident made me think over what warranted such a strong reaction and if there are things that we can change to become more inclusive. I have had a meeting with my supervisor today and we plan on marking out what’s kosher, what’s halal and what doesn’t comply with either on our menu. As for utensils, we plan on introducing utensils with green handles upon request, which will comply with the halal standards around contact and cleanliness.

I am only around for another 2 weeks at this job before I’m back at the school bench for another semester, but at least I am grateful that I helped turn a bad incident into something good.

Even though I likely live on the other side of the planet, I appreciate the lengths to which you and your supervisor are going to make it clearer for people like us with dietary restrictions. You could've simply turned away future customers by saying you don't offer anything halal/kosher. Thank you.

At the same time, I still feel embarrassed by what that fellow did. I try to avoid such misunderstandings as much as possible by sticking to restaurants that I trust. I'd rather be bored with the same restaurant for a month than having to worry about where my meat is sourced from. And all my immediate friends are that way.

Probably that fellow has got other problems to deal with and he's letting out some of it on you. I am not sure how different his story is from yours, but it seems to me to be the usual case of a restaurant not expecting to serve customers with religious dietary restrictions.

How will he execute a proper fatwah, or jihad with a non-halal knife?

People with such specific dietary restrictions need to phone in to restaurants and be sure before waisting everyone's time.

And yeah, that is a threat, you should call the authorities.
