2-5 minutes late for work and being treated this way

I wrote a lot so you can just read a little or skim this if you don't want to read all sorry.

The quick condense version of my story if you don't want to read below the line below:

Hi is it normal if you are late to work from other job that you commute from with traffic sometimes I'm late 2-5 minutes for the second job but boss says no excuse. I have a disability so don't drive and I take the train because I can't stand up long and constantly feel faint 24/7 and Uber is too expensive. No customers are usually in building in the first 1-2 hours of my shift and there's someone else working the same desk as me but he's always watching movies or playing games she doesn't allow me to use my phone because I'm late and tells me to leave it in locker all day. She also says I can't take a break because I'm late when I'm entitled to 30 mins because I'm there 7 hours. My coworkers take 1 hour when they are only supposed to take 30 mins and they also spend 2-3 hours sometimes 4 hours in the lockeroom kissing, watching movies and talking and smoking outside.
-----------------------

More info(longer story if you felt like reading but you don't have to):

My job is at a desk in a lobby it starts at 9 am. There are two of us at the lobby desk so when I get there my coworker is there. He's usually watching a tv show with airpods in but I'm not allowed my phone I was told by my boss I can't even have it on me because of my lateness but when I mention other people playing games on it and watching movies she says I don't care they can do what they want you can't so I have to leave my phone in a locker all day. So I just sit and wait for people to come by and answer questions if they have any and because of covid we get maybe 1 person coming in the first 2 hours mostly 0.

My boss doesn't let me take a half hour break either when I work 7 hours because of my 2-5 minutes late. My coworkers there 7 hours get half hour but they take 1 full hour even though they're not supposed to and they also take another 2-3 hour break later on where they watch Netflix movies in the locker room together. I tried telling my boss but she said I'm lying when I'm not they watched the entire fear street first and second movie back there today while I was alone at the desk and people from the other hallway ask where the receptionist is I go to the lockeroom to tell her to go to her desk and she says hold on there's 10 mins left of the second movie they were watching..

I only get to use the bathroom once but it's right next to the desk so I go in there to pee, take my medication, have a few bites of my sandwich quickly and lie down it's embarrassing I know but if I don't lie down I start feeling nauseas so I just stay 2-3 minutes in there I time it.

My boss keeps saying she will fire me if I'm late again but she knows my other job I can't quit and I can't drive so I don't know what to do. She says I'm lazy because I can't get here fast enough but I leave my first job right away which is 7 hours and work 6 days a week and I am at the desk the whole day while many hours go by and the guy is watching movies or talking outside smoking a cigarette and the other workers like the receptionist from the other hall is in the locker room too for ages watching movies and talking to her boyfriend on the phone. Why am I not allowed to take any break or be 2-5 mins late when I'm commuting and I told her the first week I started working there it's been 6 months. My clock ins show this:

Monday 9:03
Tuesday 9:00
Wednesday 9:02
Thursday 9:00
Friday 9:05
Saturday 9:03

My commute I explained to her. It's 15-20 minutes by train. I leave my first job right away I wear my clothes for my second job under my clothes for my first job to save time too. She says I'm lazy and she even called me evil for being so selfish but I don't think I'm selfish I'm trying my very best

There's probably someone in your company you can report this to. Perhaps HR or corporate?

I'm sorry that you have health problems but yes, it is normal for your boss to be pissed when you are late for work.

Yes, normal to be annoyed, or even angry about tardiness, but not normal to abuse a disabled employee.

You caught me. I didn't actually read the full post before I commented.

I will hang my head in shame

An expectation that you show up on time is in fact quite normal.

Virtually all companies I worked with required you to be on time as a normal practice; with allowances for occasional misses and medical appointments or situations.

There are companies that offer flex time where its not an issue. Obviously you don't work at one of those.

So one possible solution is to find a new 2nd job where there is flex time.

If you work in the USA and you have a medical condition that interferes with your ability to keep a normal work schedule there is a Federal Program that allows your Dr to fill out some forms and the employer must grant you the flexibility you need. It typically has to be renewed every so often (and might be under the FMLA name). I once used it for about a year until I gained better control of a situation.

I'm sure that similar programs exist in many of the western countries. Do your research based on where you live - if you live outside the USA.

The employer is not required to pay you for the time you miss; and in many cases your above record would incur a 15 minute per day dock in pay.

I wish you well with this,

    • Is that regular disability or something else? I've never applied for disability because I've heard it takes years to get approved.

But my boss never lets me take my one fifteen minute break or my lunch break and I almost always stay 10 minutes later to lock everything up in our department because my coworker at the desk leaves early every day. So I thought that losing my lunch for being 2-5 minutes late and my 15 minute break and staying later was enough penalization

It is not Disability. Its for temporary or more modest health conditions.

Look up FMLA on the internet if you live in the USA to learn more. In my case the "12 weeks" was cumulative time off and in about a year I might have used about 1/4 of that - as I took of partial days at times.
