"cat stealer"

Is it wrong that my neighbors daughter got a kitten a while back and I took it? Ok! Sounds bad! But this kid has serious issues and when she got that kitten all I saw was her tossing that tiny thing in the air and leaving her outside with a not so nice dog. She would go through the holes in the gate to get into our yard. I already had a lot of cats but I took her in for a little bit and she got very attached to my husband. I would take her back outside at night, but she would cry at the door. So eventually she stayed in doors. It wasn't until she became too mischievous and we left her outside with the other cats. She has her shots and was spayed so she did very well. Then my neighbors daughter bluntly asked why I'm a cat stealer. Something I can ignore, but today my cat is missing and my sister said she saw the girl take her. Is it wrong that I took her? Is she technically mine since I took care of her for a year? Should I ask for her back? So many questions...

  • Hmm, I would think it odd they took so long to bother caring that the kitten was being looked after by you but on the other hand, if you were concerned about the animals welfare, it might have been better to contact animal services, whomever they may be where you are.

But I think technically, since they bought the cat, no matter how crappy they may or may not be, they are the technical owners. But if you have worries, consider calling animal protection services, if you think it warrants it.

These are people I've been next to for years! Very awkward unfortunately.

Just call someone. These people need a wake up call on their psychotic child's behavior. I am sure that you can request that you stay anonymous. In fact, I don't think animal protective services give out the name of the people that report to them for their own safety. If they try anything with you, all you need to do is call the police and file legal action against them.

People generally guess who reports them.

Yes… I remember many years ago, when I was at summer camp, I reported to counsellors about one of my fellow campers trying to sell me drugs. Toted as an "upper" we (me and the counsellors) found out that it was a pill for menstrual pain. Anyway, I reported it and the counsellors had me to write down the incident. The mistake I made was writing the damn thing from First-person. I had asked them if it would have been less inconspicuous if I wrote it from a bystander's point-of-view, but they found it unnecessary. They failed to realize the possibility of the girl asking to read my testimony. Well, she found out. She had a group of cronies in our group. I was so scared that they were going to try something, but my family wouldn't pull me out. They made me paranoid of them. I was further made an outsider… but still, at least I did the right thing.

If they find out she did report them and in retaliation try something, if she calls the police and threatens legal action, they'll more then likely won't do anything.

I dont think that'll work. Her mom seems to turn a blind eye to everything her daughter does...

I'm so sick of people are being like this, DON'T GET AN ANIMAL IF YOU CAN'T TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT! SIMPLE AS THAT! IT'S NOT A TOY FOR YOUR CHILDREN IT'S A LIVING CREATURE!

She should bring along someone for protection and as a witness.

I understand why you called them. The kid is clearly not a good owner for the cat. You have taken care of the cat and it seems like its very attached to you. Your owner probably figured this out and stole it back. I would call animal services like some of the above suggested. If that ends up dead thanks to neglect its going to be the family's fault. You said they let it out with a vicious dog. If its a dog that hates cats they are putting this animal in danger. If the dog kills the cat they are going to have to kill the dog.

You should have reported her behaviour to the ASPCA. You still should.

  • When she asked you why you are a "cat stealer" (that made me laugh), you should have told her exactly why you had the cat. That way she'd either be so pissed off at you she'd let you keep it, or she'd take it and try to prove you wrong.

There's not much you can do at this point except talk to them about it
    Or, like another user mentioned, steal it back and dye it a different colour. =}

I actually did tell her and she did react, but not in the best way... I heard her saying something before she ran inside and I kept thinking what was she doing? She was locking my cat in a parked car in their backyard so she wouldn't cross over. I was in a panic! I managed to get her out though.

You stole an innocent little girl's kitten, don't even try to rationalize this for yourself. You ARE a bad person and a cat thief.

STFU! We saved a kitten by getting her or him out of the hands of our neighbors they gave the kitten to their child and the child plays with it like it's atoy that's no way to treat and animal this woman is looking good after the kitten she says so herself so buzz off!

If I were you I'd def. would take it back or go to the police if you had chipped it and have a chipnumber! Prove you're the owner and get it back!

If the cat didn't like how it was being treated, it would teach that child a valuable lesson and the kid would think twice before coming near it again. Your reasoning is she throws the cat and leaves it outside? Ever heard of fun or an outdoor cat?
        Good day criminal.

This girl is like 10 and has a history of child abuse and molestation. Just the other day she got the cat back. Her first actions were to lock it in a vehicle in their backyard with the windows rolled all the way up. I was in a panic. The kitty knew I was outside so it would go to the window closest to me and meow. It was terrible.
