"gay" is not a personality

Why do so many gay people nowadays make being gay their personality? Like it's the ONLY thing they can define themselves by and they only ever refer to things as "gay" and make jokes about being gay and don't even get me started on 'shipping' same-sex characters or even band members together. Like omg two male characters in a tv show are friends and they actually hugged once, that HAS to mean they're gay for each other!! (Because there's no such thing as platonic love to these people obviously).
I'm sorry to say a sexuality isn't a personality, nor can a thing be a gay and there is such a thing as platonic love, I know it's shocking but it's true. There's got to be other things these people can talk about right? Otherwise it's just sad and it honestly makes them look like posers who are actually straight people who wants to be special.

Disclaimer i'm not a homophobe I just find it obnoxious it's all over everywhere and like it's just a sexuality, chill the fuck out. You must be pretty boring if you have to constantly go around telling everyone how gay you are. It's like if all christian people in the whole world went around going "omg i'm so christian!!", "omg look at that cross it's so CHRISTIAN like ME tihihihi" or "look at that dude in that movie with long hair he must secretly be JESUS, he even walked past a CHURCH in one scene. Here's a youtube video of 10120202 reasons why this guy is JESUS!!!"

I tend to agree, but it isn't limited to being gay, it's really multiple things. Some people become so wrapped up in one trait they have that they make it their whole identity, and I don't think that's healthy. There is more about people than just one thing.

I know people like this when it comes to being a gamer, being a parent, certain hobbies they have, etc. Also with their sexuality.

Oh gawd. I know people that do that shit when it comes to their political side. It's annoying as fuck even if they're on the same political side as me. XD

Agreed, women who make their whole personality being a mum are the most boring and annoying people on this planet.

Yes, I don't get it! It is possible to be a loving, caring mother and also have other things about you and in your life than just being a parent.

  • I agree and this extends to the whole LGBTQ+ stuff in general. It's like hey, buddy, if you're so bare minimum that you need to feel special by placing your identity into what you are rather than what you accomplish then maybe, just maybe, you aren't that special.

As for two men on TV, I know what you mean and I entirely blame Tumblr. I swear it seems like two male characters can't just love one another without certain groups thinking they wanna trade dicks. Like no, two attractive men loving one another and caring for one another doesn't give them "the big gey", stfu. I'm looking at you, Supernatural.

I think part of it has to do with the phrase "more than friends". It's put an idea in people's heads that romantic love is inherently stronger than platonic love and that any strong love must be romantic. It creates a false tiering system. In reality, friendships can be just as strong or stronger than romances.

Didn’t you hear? Castiel confessed his love for Dean then got sent straight to Super Hell for being gay.

People writing fan fiction of “Wincest” need their heads examined though.

You right, but I think everyone does this, it’s just more noticeable when it’s gay. Plenty of straight people’s whole personality is “I have sex” / “I watch porn” (There are guys obsessed with female porn stars for example). They try to turn everything into sex jokes even if it’s just a cute / wholesome moment, and if they see a even slightly attractive woman doing anything they will start babbling about “muh penis”.

Don’t know, maybe it prevents them from having to develop one or something.

Netflix has massively encouraged this problem.

A lot of their programming seems to feature gay sidekicks whose main characteristic is that they are gay. They do gay people things, talk about gay people stuff, and just generally seem to have nothing else going on. They are very much written in as a novelty.

I don't meet many gay people like this in real life, but I'm sure if I didn't know any gay people and I just had netflix to go off, I'd think that they were all some sort of homogeneous ball of gayness with no other facets to their personalities.

Yeah I can see your point and it's not homophobic. I haven't noticed too much of it but maybe that's just cos I haven't been to the same places as you. I might find it a bit irritating too though to be around someone for too long if they're always talking about the same stuff that I'm not interested in, but otherwise I'm happy for them if it makes them happy and if they talk about it with other like-minded people.

I have noticed comedians before where one of the very first things they'll bring up is that they're gay and where all they'll talk about is things to do with being gay. I don't care that they're gay but it just gets old.

And it is weird alright how people will ship characters who have barely interacted at all and interpret anything as evidence for them being gay. But I find that more funny than irritating really.

It's almost like some people think that gay is an charicter trait from a cartoon or something. To be interesting is what you do rather than the small little boxes you can associate yourself with.

Gay is not a personality, but the stereotypes we attribute to gay people probably make up this “personality” you are against.

Okay, yes you have a piont of people making that their personality but shippers are a different story entirely So do not get it confused. Shippers often have an addiction to romance for some reason or another. I think mainly unfulfilled sex drive. Shipping has nothing to do with gay either, as some people are addicted to shipping in general.

I'm gonna be honest as a bisexual person I agree. I don't think me being bi is such an important feat that everyone should know, and often times people forget about it because I never bring it up unless it's relevant. Gay is not a personality its a sexuality, and I don't understand how someone can make their personality off of something so frail as whether they like cock or vagina (or both or neither).

But this isn't just gay people. Theres straight people, as you said, who make their religion define their lives. Theres vegans out there that it seems the only thing they do is vegan activism. Theres Kpop fans who find that their entire world revolves around a semi feminine Korean dudes. Sometimes when I see people like that I wonder if theres an actual human behind all that, or if thats really all that is to them. But its important to note theres crazy in every group, its not exclusive just to one or the other.

One's personality is what one makes it. If one chooses to make one's personality the way you describe, then that is one's personality.

Totally agree. I hate the whole Pride thing with all their marches and stuff telling the world they are gay. Why can’t they just get on with their lives without announcing their sexuality to the world. The only people that actually care if someone else is gay, are the homophobic idiots, and that’s because they want to react in some negative manner to the fact that someone else doesn’t share their sexuality.

You don’t see straight people going round shouting out to the world ‘Oh look at me I’m straight, I’m a woman but I only fancy men’. I really don’t care what other people get up to or who they sleep with. I do object though to people ramming it down everybody else’s throats.

I think thats a bit different. In the current world, the LGBTQ is oppressed in many parts of the world, that you can't refute. The "Pride Thing" is a way for these people who feel rejected and shit on by the collective society to feel happiness, and be able to be proud of who they are. I know it might be difficult to understand, but as I bisexual person I have felt the urge to blow my brains out if the world thinks i'm just a freak and if my family members and friends will think the same. What the fuck is the point of living if i'm not needed or wanted by anything simply because of how I was born? Let them have their moment man, its hard being LGBTQ.
