i don't want to go to college?

I'm going to college soon but I really don't feel like it. I was a straight A student in highschool but now I don't feel like working or going to college. I feel like being a housewife and just volunteering while I figure out which career path to go take. I feel like I have no break but even as I say this a gap year isn't an option for me because my parents really want me to go to college and I feel I'll be last in the rat race of the working world if I don't. Ideas on what I should contemplate or do would be helpful :)

  • Why should someone have to fork over tens of thousands of dollars and spend several years to learn what they could by simply reading a book instead?

College is the biggest scam there is.

    • I couldn't agree more. College is an even greater scam then my highschool career but it seems necessary to work and be recognized... Which is why I feel tired...

    I think you should go...
its perfectly fine if you wish to be a house wife ...I myself am an at home mom.
but you didnt mention a partner or kids? So what are you going to do until you find someone to settle down with? Also its best to always have something to fall back on...and a college education may be very helpful.

I think you will be fine once you start school. If the folks are gonna pay, then I don't see much choice, unless you could ask them for a gap year.
But if all you desire in life, and I am not criticizing, is to be a housewife, then why waste the money and take a space someone else really wants?
Bottom line it's your life, not your parents', so make your own choices.

    • Funny thing is I think I'll be fine once I start too! But right now I don't feel so confident. I know it doesn't matter but I'll be getting a scholarship so everything's paid for... And yeah I rebel against my parents all the time but in this case I feel I shouldn't.

You sound level headed, if not set on a direction, so it's probably normal to be nervous about starting a new life as a college kid. Good luck.

Go to a college, but take a year off first. Then find something you enjoy doing and go to a community college. Go for a semester and see if its the right fit. If not, you'll have still spent money, but it won't be an outrageous amount like forcing yourself through four years at a state or private university. Talk to your parents about these alternatives. You said you wanted to be housewife, so I'm assuming you'll want kids eventually. What about a career with children or social work (since you mentioned the desire to volunteer). Think it over, but don't skip education until you've given it a try. :)

Go and pick something that you love. It's always good to have a backup plan.

How much is it going to cost you financially? If you're paying with student loans? NO.

This has become an institutional rite of passage. You don't have to do it. In fact you shouldn't go unless its 100% paid for upfront so that when you graduate you walk away scot free.

The rat race? LOL! Well, it does exist. But, there are loopholes if you're creative/unorthodox/brazen. No prob's.

Anyways, in the UK, lots of people in your shoes take what's known as a GAP YEAR where they travel and what not.

    There ya go.

    • Thanks! I'm actually getting a scholarship... so paid for: YES. I agree with you but taking a gap year is costly for me...travel is wayyy expensive...and my parents are really pushing for me to go, so I probably will!
I just hope I can be as creative/unorthodox/brazen as you propose, especially since I may be working in a challenging, scientific field.
