Yeah, sure. I think it's widely acknowledged that immersing yourself in the language is generally the best way to learn it. Visiting the country is probably the best, but in this instance you're still getting the written language, rather than the spoken. It's a great way of picking up new language and seeing the differences between the way similar words are used depending on context, etc., which you might not learn from a textbook. I think it's a pretty great idea.:)

However, I think it's mainly useful for picking up new words, and I think studying the proper grammar would be a good idea. I wasn't taught English grammar, and that seems pretty common, so you might pick up some bad habits. Studying the grammar properly just helps and you get a much better grasp of the language and how it works, in my opinion. And I don't think your English is poor at all! I understood your post perfectly, which can't even always be said for some of the users who speak English as their first language!

It'll probably improve your understanding of informal conversation, but don't rely on it to improve your formal grammar or spelling. Plenty of people here either can't or won't use correct English - in fact plenty of people here are still learning English themselves. You have to be careful not to pick up on other people's bad habits.

It's a good idea to use sites like this as cultural and linguistic reference points, but don't shun the opposite end of the spectrum - read classic English-language novels and poetry, immerse yourself in websites with a high standard of literacy etc.

Basically, don't limit yourself to just websites like this :)

You should watch out for the grammar Nazi though. If you fuck up anything they will chew your butt.

I would say yes and no. English is not my first language and I started learning it at five years old. On this site there are people who write very good english and others who have very poor vocabulary and who make very big spelling erro

It's a good way to learn slang/memes/idioms etc. and the kind of english everyday people might use. i wonder what your first language is? I also use foreign language social sites for practice
