I've been trying to train myself off of doing that lately. With little success.

  • Yeah, it's normal. Usually, when people say that thing, they might be thinking, "Hey, it might be a bit rude to really LAUGH OUT LOUD, so perhaps I could just say the abbreviation..."
So, you see, maybe they don't know that someone is getting annoyed so next time when they (somebody you actually know) say that thing, say the opposite: COL (Crying Out Loud)
and when they look at you, you say how you feel about them saying the thing.

Whenever I say lawl in real life, I always include a slight chuckle before, in the middle, or after, so I am indeed laughing out loud a bit.

I loathe it, but I care more about people than I do about some small, albeit fucking irritating, thing.

Maybe they did laugh out loud. Even if they didn't, it means they found something funny or they want to make sure the reader understands what atmosphere to read what they wrote in so they don't misunderstand. That is the meaning of the use.
