Unfortunatly too many people are like them. Not taught by their idiot parents how to care for fellow humans they don't know. I feel for you. You were caring enough to share and that's the treatment you got. I was almost in a similar situation a few years back with a bum wanting money. He was pesty but didn't chase me. I'm just glad you are safe.

Some hobos are crazy. Why they are hobos to begin with. Yes some are harmless but some are very dangerous. Think of why someone would be on the street. A lot of times it is people who have mental issues but no one is paying for medical treatment so they are let out on the street, and some are drug addicts looking for the next score, Some are homeless teens that got kicked out of the house when turning 18, and some are abused runaway children who become whores on the street or panhandle and some are achoholics. So think about why someone would be homeless. In fact they had an incident in which a hobo almost killed a cop as he attacked the man while he was with his family putting him in the hospital. Yes teens tend to be useless fucking idiots. Children don't care they just laugh like little fuckers.

You know what a dollar's worth to a hungry man? I've seen a guy picking crumbs off the floor of a subway car in Brooklyn.

Give them your CHANGE, not the money you're going to SPEND. Of course if you're taking dollar bills out of your wallet there's more where that came from.

More often than not the homeless are very thankful for your charity. Just don't be stupid enough to let them think that they can take advantage of you. Just like anybody else (except a little crazy sometimes).

Yeah it is normal and that's y u always ALWAYS just walk away. U never even acknowledge them or give them money! Or they do that! I was in ac and this bum really gave my bf n I a hard time. He tried to steal our camera, and touched me which pissed me off, and steal our money!!! It was horrible!

I have a similiar situation to share. Once I was at a store and a lady asked me for a dollar and I said no and just ignored her. She walked away and left me alone. I paid for my things and left the store. When I started walking home I turned around and she was behind, she was crying and told me that she was thirsty and she needed a soda and she kept following me. There were people outside but no one helped me. So I reached in my pocket and had a few quarters in it ( I didn't open my purse though) I threw the change at the bitch and she walked away. I don't think she was homeless, because she had new clothes on but she most of had mental problems.

Understanding a bum psyche is kind of hard for any person. We are talking about people whobdo not get much affection on a daily basis, so the slightest phisical contact triggers, weird behaviors. In that case, the guy simply figured out you were likely not to beat him if he crossed that line, so he went for the other money he thought was in your jeans. That is why most people treat them nastily. Their moods tend to be kind of extreme and their behavior transcends the boundaries normally keeping us behaving within certain limits. I often imagine a whole country of bums living in some sort of post war/depression scenario, in which everyone must fight over a breadloaf or a can of catfood or some water to take a shower. The solution to the trouble of homelessness lies in readily available services anyone can use. But if the governament activated itself to provide such services, the rest of the population would get kind of pissed because no matter what everyone thinks to get some food and clothing and a basically decent life you must struggle and sort of deserve it.
So yeah, most people see a bum's life as some sort of punishment bestowed on them for having sinned against capitalism.
But still, maybe it would have been better if you just kept that dollar for yourself, it could not possibly change his life anyway.

I just say I'm a broke ass college kid with no money every time. Never show them you have money because it's pretty likely they hope you're dumb enough to reach into your wallet so they can see how much you have. The nicest thing I'll do is give them the bust of a cig, and that's only if they don't look cracked out.

Not normal, but a homeless man in Pittsburgh tried to force his way into my dads car once. XD I'm paranoid about locking car doors now...

That happened to me, my mum and me were out and this bum ask if he could have some money my mum said no i gave him 5$ my mum snatched it out his hands he started chasing her i didnt help.

i go to school in new orleans. there's this one particular red light that's right at the interstate entrance that serves as bum central. they hang out under the overpass... anyway, when i get stopped at the light, i CRINGE every time. hordes of them swarm the stopped vehicles begging for everything from change to clothes to drugs. it's awful. like someone up there said - avoid eye contact!
