A fear of wide open spaces?

Well basically, wide open spaces freak me out. There is nothing to hold on to, nothing to protect you, and there is no cover from the danger ahead of you. I hate feeling this way; it's incredibly overwhelming and causes me to almost or actually have a panic attack. So read these and you will see what I mean:

Imagine a large, wide open field with dead yellow-brown grass. There are no trees, no buildings, no objects, just what seems to be miles and miles of low hills. You hear a rumble, and clouds gather. There's a flash in the sky, and the clouds are getting darker and greyer. The wind gets heavier, and the thunder is getting deafening. There is no shelter, no object to hide under, nothing to hold on to, just the wide open fields as the sky looms above you with shrieking wind and crashing thunder.

----------------------------------------------
How does this sound to you? How does it make you feel? How about this:
----------------------------------------------

Your boat has crashed, and the storm is getting worse. You see your white yacht collapse and sink into the dark water around you. A bolt of lightning screams through the dark grey clouds above you and reflects onto the ocean. Rain starts to fall, and the thunder continues. The navy-blue waves are getting taller and mightier as the wind grows and grows in its force. There is no land around, no floating objects to hold onto, just you. You floating in the perilous dark water as the lightning bolts fly through the black clouds, and the rain cascades into the sea.

The second one was incredible hard to write. Not because of thinking what to write, but because it was freaking me out XD. I both used a storm as an example, because that really adds fear to the situation for me.

So think about these two situations: Do they freak you out like they do with me? To think nature is above you in the clouds with its control of lightning and rain and wind, and can easily kill you as you have nothing to protect yourself with?

    Agoraphobia.

I believe it's fairly common. I have something vaguely similar, claustrophilia.

    • I think agoraphobia is more of the fear of going outside of your home due to a fear of panic attacks in certain situations. According to Wiki, it's the fear that a person will have a panic attack in a situation where they can't escape, (like with my example with the field and sea).
I guess it is agoraphobia then because I do feel panicky if I think of those situations, and overwhelmed with no hiding or protection. Was asking to see if anyone else had this though :P

I've been walking in a desert once with no one else around, just myself and my thoughts..

You should watch Man vs Wild.

The first one didn't do nothing for me and, in the second one it's the fear of drowning and maybe sharks.

I do not share in your fear of opened spaces. It's difficult for me to understand really. I know there are many that share that fear, I simply do not.

Is there anything out there that is potentially helpful?

    • To me it's just the overwhelming fear that there is nothing to hold onto and that the sky is so large and just over looms you with such power. I guess it just freaks me out for some reason.

Anything out there? Therapy? I just don't think it's that much of a major problem, I mean I'n not usually floating in the ocean or in a large field in a thunderstorm Lol. I was just asking this to see if anyone else felt this way.

Yu are so right about the fear of nothing to hold on to and the sky being overwhelming. I get panic attacks when I'm in wide open spaces or even on a street without the protection of large trees. It even affects my ability to walk from a building out to my truck in a parking lot. It's terrifying.
