Adding mandatory classes to curriculum. yay or nay

When I say adding and making mandatory I do not mean adding as a mandatory elective. I mean part of the core curriculum like math, science, English. I also mean for this to be added at the Highschool/Middle school level.

Ball room dance & social etiquette-To teach social skills and how to present ones self
Swimming and water survival- To make sure they can save themselves if drowning or ever in a disaster
Drill of natural disasters and Basic First aid-Make sure they know how to survive any natural disaster and basic first aid for themselves or others
Young Leadership program(Which will pick leaders with potential)-Gives kids a chance to shape the future of the country
Taxes and Accounting(How do do taxes, budget and handle money)-Makes sure kids know how to budget, do taxes and handle money in the future
Coding and web design-Possible self career as well as very essential in the age of computers

I think we will have much more well rounded student and far less issues in school if we added this stuff. Not mention preparing kids for the future.

Since I mean adding another classes I dont necessarily think we should add on all the classes at once. Maybe One at a time like adding a 6th class for 9th, adding a different one for 10th like that.

I agree with all of these 1
I agree with some of these and I will say which ones why or why not 8
I agree with none of these and I will state why 2
I think we should just destroy the current system and start over 1
Other(I shall comment) 0
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Personally, I think school is too short. It should go for 50 weeks a year. Just like a job. Some of the classes should actually be apprentice programs to help assimilate the students into the real world. The core classes, such as math, history, language studies could become more in depth and teach more when you don't have to cram so much information into 8 weeks. Teachers just teach the tests and don't really teach the students because that is all the time they have.

Remove the social etiquette class. A lot of parents get pissed off when schools try to tell their kids how to live if it's not in agreement with their way and their way is probably shitty and those parents are probably assholes.

Remove the banking class and make it optional. A lot of kids really don't give a fuck about that kind of stuff so they will either be disruptive or disinterested. See: the part about school that people hate the most but will pass the class because they have to and remember nothing afterward.

The water survival class sounds like it could get dangerous. When you have that kind of liability, it's impossible to make it safe enough for everybody. Call it the mentality of a coward but there are enough parents trying to game the system already.

I work with high school students so that's just my opinion.

    • They already have swim classes in most high-school so are you suggesting we remove those also? Since it would be the same but a little more detailed. Its not like they dont have life guards on duty. The purpose of school is to learn not have fun. If that was the case school would let kids do nothing but watch toons all day. Children are suppose to learn things which will help them have a bright future. So that is missing the purpose of school. Also if anyone likes it or not we all have to do taxes, so avoiding it and pretending it does not exist is not fixing anything. Also the etiquette classes would be to teach children how to behave while at school. Schools have to teach children and have rules for how children behave anyways. So its not really that different.

Does every kid in the school swim? No. Maybe not all kids parents are willing to let them take that risk. That's a stupid thing to make mandatory. Swim clubs are full of kids with consenting parents.

No one said that school is about fun. It's about academics. Everything else you suggested is shit that these bum ass parents should be teaching their kids.

Rules for conduct and social etiquette are two different things and often these parents have issues even with simple rules. Social etiquette sounds like a fucking controversy waiting to happen.

While it would be wonderful if we had the budget and time for all this, introducing new coursework would take away from existing coursework. There's probably some stuff that currently can be done away with, but that's what you'd have to focus on first.
