Alot of unskilled labor isnt unskilled

Some things we consider unskilled inst unskilled? Like for example construction worker is considered unskilled. Which is actually a very skilled job. Many construction workers can do everything from roofing to laying concrete. Truck drivers are also considered unskilled laborers. It takes alot of skill to back a 53 foot trailer into a dock.

Unskilled labour here would refer to: cleaners, office attendants etc.. The kind of job almost anyone can do without prior training.
Drivers are not considered unskilled and construction workers are graded.

Surely no one considers construction work as unskilled?

Depends. Are you a hired for the day grunt worker or is there a title? Roofers for example.

Unskilled doesnt mean zero knowledge jobs. Just means a sizable population could do it requiring zero formal education.

It doesnt take a genius to drive a truck. It does take one to learn how to be a doctor since you have to know like a couple thousand facts about the human body and how it interacts with drugs or other stimuli.

Supply and demand also apply. If most people can do it, it tends to be low paying. That's why truck drivers are so high paying. Sure practically anyone can learn to drive a truck but most dont want to be in a truck for 14 hours a day barely seeing people.

As for flipping burgers its low skill and low expectations. Anyone can do it and it's pretty easy social commitments wise.

    • Then why isnt it called low-education jobs? Because truck driving is skilled and I dont think just anyone could do that job. Sure it doesnt take alot of education to do it. But to back the trailers takes a lot of time and skill to learn how to do it safely.

I'm saying this as a guy who is aspiring to be a truck driver. Its low skill yes. Is there a trick to it? Yes. Though at a certain point you just reach peak experience and your time committed afterwards doesnt really help you.

A doctor with 40 years under his belt has drastically increased experience than a doctor with 20 years. Same cant be said about a trucker. A trucker with 20 years has about the same driving knowlage as someone who drove for 5 years. (Company judgment wise)

Its semantics to label something as low education jobs vs low skilled jobs. They mean the same thing so changing it doesnt do anything.

Anyone who lives in reality knows the gap of importance between a burger flipper and a truck driver or construction worker.

Low skill or not it's still an all important job that needs to be fulfilled by people. This includes sanitation jobs and those in the utility fields which start to branch off in complexity increases thus schooling.

        • I would disagree that a trucker of 20 years would have the same knowledge as a 5 year driver. They know more about the industry. Many of them can even back doubles or triples like its nothing. Can back a dolly thats hooked onto a trailer. And know every little DOT regulation. Also they usually know directions very good all over the USA.

Im not disagreeing that it takes low education but lowskill doesnt seem like an accurate label to me.
