Am i working for a front company? is my boss a gangster?

I work for this old Vietnamese person who has housing for workers and has shut down severap times because of Corona. Despite this has enough money to shut down randomly, change hours, and pay for employee housing. Apperently housing thing is something some asain businesses do. As they ship in people from surrounding cities and just give them rooms in a house. However, I worked here two weeks and my boss has completly ghosted us and today was payday and they decided to simply not show up and the other cooks are either out for medical reasons or striaght up quit. I am wondering how any business can do this frequently and still make money. Am wondering if maybe the boss works for mob and this is a coverup or something.
