Appalachians or rocky mountains

Yes, this poll is short and biased to the U.S. and Canada, but I’m curious to see what users like which mountain better.

I actually give the edge to the Appalachian despite their shorter peaks. This mountain chain is home to much larger amount of biodiversity than the Rockies. Granted its amphibians, trees, and moss, but I think that’s still cool.

The Smokies are one of the foggiest places on earth, the Central Appalachians has the longest autumn season on earth in terms of how long the trees stay colorful. New England likely has the most vivid colors. You never really have to worry about wildfires in the Apps, it came happen such as Gatslinburg, but it’s not every year.

Not common knowledge to many but the Appalachians have more crystalline rock than the Rockies making Franklin, N.C. the gemstone capital of the world.

I prefer the Rockies hot springs and geysers, and larger mammals, like Grizzlies and Cougars.

Rocky Mountains!! I look out my window every day and see them. I have seen things up there that are... Let's just say our government watches and pops up out of no where! I know where to get gold, silver, crystals, diamonds, all kinds of minerals!

I live in a National Forest in the Appalachians and I've visited the rockies extensively...I prefer Appalachia. Its much livelier. I like rain, insects, animals and greenery. I like to be able to grow a garden.

    • I like the abundance of precipitation in the Apps as well. We very rarely have to worry about forest fires like out west, and we never have water shortages.

No. When I say I lived in the Appalachians I mean IN the Appalachians, woods & trees every where on all 4 sides for 50 miles.

Ahh I got ya. I think where you live now is still considered appalachia kinda on the border of it

    • There is so much culture originating out of the Smokies.

If I had to choose where to live it would be the appalachian mountains. It is the poorest part of the country but has some of the cheapest land. I found a house out there with 10 acres and 3 bedrooms for $90,000. Thats like $600 a month mortgage for 10 acres and a decent house.

No doubt but even those places are pretty rural and pretty cheap compared to a major city

The rockies are bigger and better overall, but the Appalachians are still cool.

    • The Rockies are larger, yes; but the Appalachians were higher than the present-day Rockies millions of years ago.

The Porcupine Mountains of Michigan were likely taller than the Himalayan’s and look at how much they have eroded.

All fair points, but what Im trying to say is that you could spend weeks, if not months at the rockies. The Appalachians could be seen in less time than the Rockies

Nah it’s just his not being familiar with the story, not a bias.

Apples and oranges. You’re talking about 2 different environments , each with their unique qualities. I’ve been to both and like them both for different reasons.

    • True, they’re different, but do you have a preference over the other?

I like both, each chain offers something different, but overall I’d chose the Apps.
