Are all classes necessary

I want to get everyone's opinion ( whether you go to school now or from when you were in school ) on what they think of classes in high school.
1. Do you think that all the classes they say are necessary are actually necessary or do you believe that some are not ? If not then which classes would you say are unnecessary ?
2. If they are not on the list as necessary then what classes you believe should be added to that list and why ?

all of them 4
some them 22
none of them 2
other 2
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I think all classes are necessary but schools go about it the wrong way.

    I'm looking at you, mathematics!

When I was in school, we got taught a different style of maths. It was basically four different maths (decimal, binary, hexadecimal and some other one I can't remember now). After we were taught those, normal trigonometry and algebra was a breeze.

Art isn't a hobby. It develops a different area of your brain. The two sides of the brain should both be stimulated equally. It would suck if everybody were only having their logic focussed and neglected the creative aspect of their brain.

    • I a agree with the art aspect. Creativity helps with learning and solving problems in a new way.

I don't think everyone should be forced to take certain classes. Not everyone thinks in the same way and a lot of people are dropping out of school do to a lack of self confidence because these classes are so hard for them and many of these classes they will never need at any point in their lives. Take for example, math. While I agree everyone should have an understanding of basic math the math classes they force kids to take are absolutely ridiculous and, quite often, unnecessary. Not everyone is good at math and I think the only people that should be forced to take those high level math classes are the ones that have a career field it is necessary for. I think before kids enter school, they should be required to take a test to see which field their minds work best in and those are the fields they should be pushing them in. If their mind works best in math, then give them math classes. If it's art, give them art classes. They should be pushing them in the field that their minds already work best in, not forcing them to do something their minds weren't made for.

Education on a variety of topics is necessary to form a well balanced individual. You never know what subjects are going to stimulate the thought process. The problem is that education isn't a one size fits all endeavor. And with the advancement of technology there is more to learn then ever.

What one person finds pointless, another will find fascinating. Education is meant to explore your options and stimulate the thought process.

  • Yeah, I think some classes aren't necessary and are more like hobbies than anything. Art would be one. I'm iffy on History, though. I can see the importance of knowing our history but I don't know if it's really a skill to contribute to society in ways other than for the hobbies of others. I could be wrong on that, though.

But hobbies can teach you a lot about yourself. You can't just look at the face value of a subject, you have to look at the big picture. And understanding history helps you spot patterns so you can learn from the past. It also develops critical thinking.

School should really concentrate more on developing, social life, creativity, languages, exploration and understanding.
Too much attention goes to subjects like math that really are way too much and difficult while not as important. A little math, a little fysics etc. is good but not 7(+) hours a week!

I think that the highschool outlines (US) are a good start for a well-rounded education, but there should be more variety and choice.

All classes aren't necessary. Some of the stuff you probably won't even need to apply anywhere in your lifetime. However, it makes sense why they teach it all because there's always the possibility you may have to know these things at some point. If so, you'll be able to refresh your memory on it.

I skipped mainly drama/speeches back in hs.. I would go to the dairy and buy me lollies instead, honestly hated those.
Like how is pretending to cry/standing like a stupid statue gonna help me (both impossible btw)
Future based career subjects/classes are necessary. Math should be compulsary bcos lets be honest, you need it in everything these days. hated science as well..

High school isn't really all about what you are studying, but rather teaching students how to learn and that you don't get everything the way you want it. In real life one must take the bad with the good.
Not graduating from high school does not necessarily indicate to a prospective employer that you are stupid, it indicates you are a quitter, which is why you will NOT be chosen for a job over a graduate.
It doesn't matter a tiny little bit what those students think is or isn't a necessary class; those students are just children. One must assume those who developed the curriculum are a hell of a lot smarter than those children, and those children should go with the flow, or get out and let the smarter ones get on with their education.
