Are depressed people more likely to see through illusions in life?

I personally think that depressed people/ people who have suffered much hardship are more enlightened as to see through many illusions in life, and i believe it's an invaluable tool for looking for deeper meanings in life. what do you think?

depressed people only see the bad things in life 10
depressed people tend to see more bad things in life than there are. 33
people who are depressed are more likely to see through deception 55

I think people with depression are more likely to view the negative foremost and ignore the positive.

I don't think in general being depressed allows you to see through 'illusions', because self-deception is as much a part of being depressed as it is not being depressed.

So in my opinion, depression predisposes you to a pessimistic attitude, but doesn't magically clear any clouds of bullshit.

Depression is awful and distorts one's views on everything.

I would say it works in two ways. If you think deeply, it's possible that you're more likely to see bad in the world that is too deep for "normal people" to see, which could contribute to depression. However, it's also more likely that you'll see good which is too deep for other people to see, so it goes both ways.

It could also start with depression, then lead to deeper thoughts. If you're unhappy with life, there is a great reason to search deeply for meaning, but it's not as important to think deeply if you're already happy. So it could either start with thinking deeply and lead to depression, or start with depression then lead to thinking deeply. There could be a vicious circle in which both ways happen together :P

It's also entirely possible that there's no link at all. I seem to remember reading that there's no study definitively linking depression with high intelligence. But most popular opinion and anecdotal evidence seems to suggest the opposite :P

    What I'm trying to say in a long-winded way is: "I don't know" :P

I think to some extent that depression can make people very nihilistic.

As far as I can tell, there's not significant evidence that depressed people have better observation or problem solving skills. It has been demonstrated, however, that people's IQs are lower when they're depressed. So there's that.

When I was at my lowest, I thought that I was seeing through illusions, but now, I'm not any less aware of the things that I saw then. I'm just able to cope with them better. I don't think depression has anything to do with realism.

Yes but its not caused by depression! Depression is caused by hard ships there is a difference.

    Depressed people are wiser.
They are the ones that have gone through pain, dwelled on it , then learned a lesson from it .

I'm not sure if what you're saying is true on the whole, but I do know one relevant tidbit.

Depressed people are more likely to have an accurate opinion of themselves. On looks, intelligence, charm, and everything else, depressed people rate themselves at a realistic level, whereas the control group would rate themselves consistantly higher. It's rather depressing, but it's what the study shows.

no depressed people do not see through lifes illusions. such a silly statement really. individuals who become realists see through the bullshit. its how you respond that counts.

I think depressed people are more likely to accept the negatives as a reality, but that's about where it stops for me. The people that I know who have depression, SERIOUS depression, seem to have blinders on to any "bright side" or "positive" in life. You buy them a new car? It's not the model I really wanted. You try to take them out to a nice lunch? It's too loud, there are too many people out here... depression isn't just a mood, in serious cases, it affects your perception.

Depression may make it easier to accept the negatives and look at things from a less than delightful point of view and certain ways of thinking can lead to depression when one developes a greater understanding of what is truly going on around them (as my grandmother said "the most intelligent people have the most problems because they see the world for what is really is"), but I don't think depression itself causes disillusionment.

Could go either way. Some of the the greatest philosophers were manic-depressives, like Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. Others who don't use their intelligence just languish in misery.

Boredom and loneliness does the same. Sometimes when I'm alone and bored, I think really deeply about life, about who the people I know really are through others eyes, and even about how human beings should act for the world to improve.

Sometimes, I even write down these thoughts and ideas in my journal. Thinking can get you depressed, however. The world is an immoral rathole and in order to get through it sane, sometimes, you have to not think but feel.

well, i was depressed, and back when i was depressed, i smoked ALOT of weed, and weed makes me think, and when i think i think for along time, so i was once thinking about the government, for a long time, and i asked myself whats the REAL meaning behind war? well for some, people may think that war is for power and control, sure ok sounds good, BUT what if war is meant to cover up some major problems that the government has, like back when iraq was being invaded, did ANYONE pay attention to what is happening relatively close to us? if there were some shooting next door that would have made your local news but they were to busy broadcasting the war? what could have been going on right in front of you? because you were all to blinded by the war?

now the government may read this and if its right i could be dead by morning but if they so chose to read this just know this, to me, your on a "thin leash"

anyways rant over judging off what i "wrote" here what do you ppl think?

"what if war is meant to cover up some major problems that the government has"

This is absolutely true, in some cases but not all. In an example from the UK government, where I'm from, many people on the left suspect that the failure to try and avoid the Faukland's War in the 1980s was partly due to Margret Thatcher's dip in popularity as Prime Minister. It's no secret, and I'm sure the government isn't coming for you, silly, so don't worry. Wartime generally sees a temporary boost in popularity for a country's leaders, so allowing a war to happen is a dirty trick politicians can use to get themselves out of sticky domestic situations. I'm sounding like a right conspiracy theorist here :P I'm sure there are American examples too, but I don't know enough American history.

But there are situations where the opposite is true, such as the Vietnam War. President Johnson was unable to execute his domestic reforms because the length of the war made him unpopular, so he actually *suffered* domestically.

So yeah, what you say is sometimes - but not always - true. That's what I think :P

( Sorry OP, I know this is way off-topic. I couldn't resist :P It's a very good question by the way. I wish more people had responded; maybe they will later :) )

It is not always depressed people. It is people who have been hurt a lot. They are the ones who see what the world truly is. The innocent will make stupid mistakes and be oblivious to obvious things that all people should see. Though seeing the truth is not always a happy thing. Which might make you depressed. ignorance is bliss they say.
