Are these bands considered “emo”?

I really hate all the emo bullshit. I feel like it’s fake and shallow and all the kids are just wannabe depressed dumbass attention whores with no individuality who’ve never felt a real emotion in their lives. That being said, a lot of people think I am for various reasons but it’s genuinely who I am, which is real and original and not just some fake melodramatic teen angst thing I decided to try on for a bit after I saw some kid like it on tv or some shit. It’s not an act or anything and I don’t base my identity off it. Anyway I was talking to some kid yesterday who sorta knows me and how much I hate emo kids and we talked about music and I mentioned liking Joy Division and Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees and he made fun of me for claiming to hate everything emo but liking emo bands. It pissed me off cuz you know they’re actually great bands and not some cheap money grab for teenagers going through a “phase.”I never really thought of them as emo bands but do most people think of them that way?

    The word emo was first used to describe the punk bands of Washington DC in the 80s. The bands to whom the title was applied mostly saw it as an insult and would never use it themselves.

    Joy division are accredited with being the first 'goth' band, but again, they would say they were just a punk band.

    The first band to be described as 'emo' was Rites Of Spring. If you check them out you'll find they don't really sound much like the bands you mentioned, but they may be slightly similar to early joy division and were probably influenced by them.

    No, I would not consider any of the bands you mentioned to be emo at all. I would consider those bands to be post-punk, and goth.

    All great bands. But not emo at all no they are more out of the post punk era.

    Emo is pop punk shit that didn’t get going properly until at least the very late nineties

    There's nothing wrong with a great band. I'm not going to bother listening to the bands; however, one can despise a culture, but like that culture's music.
