Are they brave or stupid?

What do you think of people who engage in extremely dangerous sports or activities, gaining nothing from it but a thrill (meaning it's not a career or anything)? Things such as base jumping or jumping off a cliff with a wingsuit. A recreational activity from which death is highly likely. Do you admire their bravery or do you think they are stupid for doing such things?

Now, I realize this is a personal choice, and by no means am I saying people shouldn't do these things if they want to, I'm simply asking your opinion on whether you admire these people or if you see them as idiotic.

They're brave, I admire them! 22
They're idiots for doing this stuff! 20
I don't feel strongly either way. 24

Niether. It's just sport for them. They're not some average joe they know what the they're doing. When you know what you're doing it gets less dangerous.

Yea there are folks that get hurt and get killed for the rush. But Jamie Pierre never had and injury.

Bravery to me implies doing something useful. I don't admire someone with a particular hobby just because it is dangerous. They are not stupid either, the chances of death or injury are fairly low, especially if you take care and have someone who knows what they are talking about to teach you.

Being into racing (fuck nascar) I think these guys are crazy as fuck but at the same time they have mad balls. Rally drivers are the craziest though. After your 3rd or 4th near death experience, i would say you're beginning to get dumb with it

Against the general trend of replies here, I admire them for doing what they want to do. But I do accept it's purely selfish and purely for the rush. It's just another drug, isn't it? In this case, adrenaline.

Oh okay, so when I sleep and the melatonin released from my brain at 4am, as im in rem, and i enjoy that, means its a drug? It's a natural chemical released from your body.. not a drug. Coffee I understand.. but everyone gets there fix from adrenaline. Some it takes extreme sports. For you, it could be posting comments. (Not saying it is, but It's an example nonetheless)
Everyone gets there fix one way or another, not necessarily from drugs.. in fact our brains fire off nuerons causing us to feel the way we do. Some strange things can ignite those nuerons in some people causing them to get a feeling from a certain action that you and I could do and not feel a thing. It affects everyone in different ways. I actually find it kind of rude to say that is selfish. We all need outlets. Whether its puttong your life on the line or putting your life ONLINE. It's just different for everybody :)

There is absolutely nothing brave about jumping off a cliff. Firefighters are brave, because they put their lives in danger TO SAVE OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES. People who put their lives in danger for no reason other than their personal entertainment are not brave. However, I wouldn't consider them stupid either. If they know the risks and chose to do so anyway that's their choice, it's up to them.

Being one of these people who do dangerous things I'd say It's a bit of both. At first It's all balls , but after a bit you know it'll probably end up bad so then its all stupidity. The adrenaline takes care of the rest.

It doesn't make them stupid, i'm sure they are well aware or the risks. They are just willing to take risks, and enjoy the rush I guess.

  • If they realize the dangers of it and realize they could get injured then they are brave.
If they don't realize the dangers and think they're invincible, they are stupid.

    • The question already assumes that they know what they are doing and know the risks. Who doesn't know jumping off a cliff in a wingsuit is dangerous? Just wondering how people percieve those that purposely put their lives in extreme danger for no reason or gain other than the "rush".

      • You would be suprised how many people either don't realize the risk or feel that the risk could never happen to them.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Stupid. Whatever fear they feel is overpowered by the rush (not bravery).

It definitely takes balls, which is admirable, but some stuff The Dudesons do for example makes me question their motives, like it's SO dangerous and stupid that I wonder why they would want to do that? I mean stuff that could cause you a slow painful death or could end up with you being paralyzed.
