I don't believe in a religion but I guess the thing closest to it would be that I identify myself as a secular humanist which is an ethical and philosophical life stance

I've never really given any thought to labeling my position on religion.
I my opinion, religion is the greatest evil. More people have been slaughtered, oppressed, displaced, forced or placed in camps, etc. in the name of religion than for any other reason. Throughout history, religion has been an excuse to torture, steal, rape, pillage, exterminate and oppress other human beings.
Religion is truly the greatest evil on this planet.
So you tell me; what label would you give those beliefs?

what you described to me is the perversion of the true religion. However, your misunderstanding is understandable. I personally believe in God, and these heinous acts against humanity are in no way condoned in any of the Abrahamic religions, and I am certain that they are not condoned in many other religions... Extremism has always existed. Twisted and gruesome people have always wanted to unravel the evil within themselves. What easier way is there to express these acts than from an religious standpoint? You are however entitled to your viewpoints, and I respect that.

Oh goodie, yet another theist who hasn't read the old testament.

You're correct that extremism has always existed: the old testament is FULL of it or are you saying all those godly orders to exterminate other tribes are "perversions of the true religion"?

As a Christian (albeit a very progressive one) I've always been embarrassed by the Old Testament. Lots of killing and violence. I remember asking my parents once why God told the Israelites/Hebrews to kill an enemy nation's babies. They replied, saying that those babies were Gentiles and weren't part of the people of God. They said those babies never would have been holy people, basically. I always thought that was a bad explanation.

What merciful God would create children's souls only for them to be pre-condemned? It's similar to the Calvinist view that we are pre-chosen to be saved. So I think most modern Christians quietly ignore those parts of the Old Testanent and stick to the New. Jesus' teachings are much more mild than the frightening way God is portrayed in the Old Testament. I wish I knew the truth behind these matters....

The Crusades, the Inquisition, the missionaries who believed that all who did not worship their gawd were condemned to hell, even though they had never even heard of this gawd, are not oddities, but church authorized extermination, oppression and brainwashing. How can you say that these acts were not authorized by the heads of the various religions involved?
Every time a religious person lays blame or responsibility for that person's actions on their deity, they are perverting everything that an intelligent man should hold dear.
I've not even brought the modern extremists into this discussion. Even the buddhists of Burma are slaughtering muslims these days, and if memory serves they shouldn't be harming even an ant. Hypocrites, one and all.
As you said, you are entitled to your viewpoints, but I doubt that I will ever understand them.

It's not possible to be both. Being an atheist is being in total disbelief of the theory of God while being an agnostic is being in niether belief nor disbelief of God. If you absolutely think that there is no God, you're an atheist. If you don't think either side can be proven and you simply don't know, you're an agnostic.

        That is incorrect.

Being agnostic answers the question of knowledge--whether or not it is possible to know that God exists in spite of individual beliefs.

Being an Athiest answers the question of belief. In spite of the knowledge, do you believe God exists?

Belief and knowledge are not mutually exclusive.

What I am saying when I say I am an Agnostic Athiest is, "although I know it is not possible to know whether or not God exists, I believe that he/she/it does not exist."

        Understand?

Oh, okay. That makes sense. I was thinking as if being agnosic was purely not having a stance while being atheist was having 100% disbelief, backed by knowledge. Sorry about that. Thanks for the explanation. It was helpful.
