Are you celibate?

I'm celibate and I was wondering if anyone else on here was. If you're celibate, what lead you towards practicing celibacy and how long have you practiced it?

(Sorry, if I stuck this in the wrong category.)

Eh. I don't have a partner. I don't seek casual sex and I haven't had it for a while (about a year), and I don't miss sex at all, but I'm not actively celibate. In the same way that someone who just happens not to drink might not call themselves teetotal, I happen not to have sex but I don't call myself celibate. Plus I certainly don't plan to never have sex ever again! :P

When you have sex, what's the driving force behind it then?

The good sex I've had was with someone I loved. It's a fun, adventurous way to express your care for each other. Love sex is great because it really connects two people.

The bad sex I've had was hookup sex. Most of the driving force behind that was to express my masculinity, earn praise from my friends and try things I'd seen in porn. That sex was awful because it lacked the fundamentals - care for the other person, attentiveness to their feelings and experience, and any kind of authenticity (awkward porn moves chained together isn't fun sex). Hookup sex is a million miles away from love sex, and I don't plan to have hookup sex again. It was a different time when I understood myself less.

How do you 'practice' celibacy, by running faster than your would-be rapist?

I am celibate because women don't want to touch me. It makes my life very hard. Nevertheless, I still do enjoy women and have faith in womankind.

But you've mentioned girlfriends you've had before? So you can't say all women don't want to touch you. Plus you might have secret online admirers...

A secret admirer? Whew! You know how to make a guy's heart flutter.

Actually I did have a girlfriend in college. Met her at a party where you shake hands with the lights off, then turn them back on. So, she didn't see me first. Then she said she was amazed at what a tactile, wonderful sense of touch I had. I would give her light back rubs that put her into a trace. She loved it, but eventually left me for a rich guy because in the long run, money was more important than love.

I've always had an annoyingly high libido, so the idea seems refreshing, but difficult to me. Grats to anyone who can manage it though. Seems like it requires a lot of self-control.

When I was plagued with the traditional concept of "sex must never come before marriage" that society puts on young men and women, yes I was celibate. However, one day I realized that, that notion is a bit outrageous and if I wanted to continue celibacy it would be because I genuinely wanted to, not because society wanted me to. So, that night I lost my virginity, all because of a very sudden decision that I was tired of society's pressures. I loved my boyfriend and made the poor bugger wait for 6 months without sex (or any sexual contact of any kind), while before dating me he had a casual sex partner. The entire first six months I was dating him I had wanted to pursue sexual relations, but I didn't want to be labelled as a slut for giving it up before marriage (even though my friends had done the same).

Needless to say, I personally think sex is a nice connection between partners, but there are relationships where it doesn't have to be necessary. However, I enjoy it, it makes me feel good, sexy and relieved, but I also respect the choices of those who practice celibacy!

The kind of celibate who refrains from sex, or marriage?
