Art school is making me hate art

Ever since I started college at this art school, I've become a completely different person. From the happy-go-lucky to the lonely depressed and philosophical; people suck and art is dumb and just another excuse to hate/question society unreasonably. I'm so sick of it and I feel like I got nothing out of it but negativity. I try to think it taught me a reality check but I could have lived without it in fact, probably for the better without it.
Anyone else hate going to art school? Ugh

I so understand what you mean, things are so annoying when you over study them, it's better to just make art. Just do it.

    Are u my friend??
She recently told me the same thing.. i wanted to study art, but something got in the way and i study something else. She does art, and since then, she's so confuse! She hates it. Her drawings changed because of her teachers saying to her that everything is wrong, and now she just lost it!
I think it's pointless to study art..just be an artist!

    • i love the professors theyre great.. really insightful. my art making's definitely improved and broaden in terms of materials and media. but the people you'll be studying with when youre at an art school, (my school is top3) they're all dickheads who think theyre the lost twin to banksy or something. some are actually amazing artists but i feel bad for them cos i dont know why they would want to go in debt for the superb art they can already make and make $$ out of..

its weird. bach fine arts is such a waste of money ive never regretted this bad in my life. i thought it would teach me to become a better thinker and meet the greater side of the world. but i guess art students tend to be outcasts for the right reasons. they're lame and smell bad.

studying art can be daunting, especially when you spend 7 days a week comparing your drawing 2 assignment that you did at 3 am the night before class to people who have mature, realized bodies of work. i have been in art school for a long time, because i love it. i have received tons of great tips to help me love art when i start to hate it, and trust me that happens often. my favorite was when my professor told me to tell the little voice in the back of my head that says "i can't do this or I'm not good enough." to shut up and go get a cup of coffee or something...

If you went into your bfa program thinking you were going to come out a millionaire, well then you might have needed to get your head checked awhile back. art school is about an investment in the present rather than the future. so while you're in it, have fun. tell teachers that say stupid shit that they are stupid, then tell them why. its funny and it gives you confidence to create your own work, not just rehash what they tell you.

you will spend four years studying the art that "rejects" the academy, yet you are learning about it in an academic context. the whole thing can't be taken seriously, but if you do art school right you can do awesome shit and meet awesome people. just keep an open mind!

I know what you mean. I studied graphic design and it was the biggest waste of time. It has gotten me absolutely nowhere and I have never regretted something so much in my life either. My problem though was that the place I went to was shit. Very disorganized and very unhelpful when came to following through on all things they told me were great about the college.

I think the only thing you can do is work with what you've got. Try and make the most of this seemingly terrible situation. At least you have good professors, that's a positive! Try and not think about how much you regret the decisions you've made, it's just too depressing.

    Good Luck!

the same thing has happened/is happening to me. i chose a crap college over a possibly good one because of location and now i'm stuck here! are you still designing or what are you doing now? the reason i'm asking is that i'm kinda confused bout what to do next year since i have the option to stay on another year. i don't know if i want to continue in this field or try something else.

this is my last year so i'm just going to get it over with and get my bfa. i got to the school of the art insitute of chicago and it costs so much, enough to probably buy a house in st tropez. i think as much as it is great to be able to study something we think we are really passionate about, it would be more reasonable to spend $$ on something that will guarantee a nice rebate in the future considering the global economy right now. good luck in whatever you decide!

Same happened to me, gradually during the 4 years I spent doing an Art degree I felt more and more like it was all a pile of crap, and that we were being encouraged to be introspective and critical of life rather than just loving what we created. It's 13 years since I left University, and I still have so much self doubt and negative feelings about the thing I used to love - making art. I haven't picked up a brush since then. :(

Whatever happened to your passion for art? What stops you from being individuals?? I went to art school and sure, most of the students were there because they were too dumb to do science and had a small modicum of artistic ability...but it did not affect me..my love was for art..the history of it, the wonderful feel of creating something on paper. IF you feel you are better than the school..just leave it and go and do something else.
I was not able to afford my last year, and it broke my heart. You people are so ungrateful, and really don't sound as tho' you have a passion for the arts, and are not interested in absorbing all there is to Art. Basically, you have to be born artistic..and feel artistic..or you will not ever succeed with it. Many of the great artists went without food or bed or family in order to fulfill their passion...and that is why they were succesful...not because someone 'taught them to draw'. you can but dvd's to do that.

I wanted to go to an art school and I attended the pre courses so I'd get extra points when applying. It was horrific, i was put under loads of stress and people were very competitive, too much for my over-shy self. The teacher was very tough and always told everyone we sucked. Basically the course comprised of that.

But it was actually very useful, because in order to take critics seriously and understand what might be wrong with your drawing.
Art is a very complex thing, it has a meaning, a meaning YOU put in it, but in order to make it more noticable you have to learn how to make it look real.

Is it because they make you do modern art? Yeah, i can see why if thats the case. To me most modern art just looks like scribbled messes and the ''Artist'' has no idea what to do. The REAL type of art is that youll occasionally find online. Where people have digitally drawn amazing things.

I have every sympathy with the I hate art school bit; it's obviously broken her spirit, and I can relate to that. Can't to the 'art is dumb' bit. (Cant continue my comment 11's111111111111111111111111111111111111111 d1ue to this11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111
