At what age should you know who you are and what you want in life?

i believe it is not normal for someone in their 40's to have self doubt and not know who they are and what they want out of life. this poll will tell me that i am either right or wrong about this. When did you know, without any doubts, who you were and what you wanted in all aspects of life? when could nothing sway you any longer? were you in your teens or did it come later?

It depends, I'm sure self discovery is different for everyone.

I'm almost 30 and I'm plagued with uncertainty. Its more confusing now than when I was a teen as I was more idealistic back then but now I see the reality

I have fluctuated between thinking I know who I am and knowing that I do not know who I am. many times. I feel I am getting closer to be at one with myself. It is a life journey I believe.

I'm 38, & don't even understand the term "know who you are"! I definitely don't know what I want out of life.
I doubt anyone can ever REALLY know who they are. Considering people change from day to day; various situations, & scenarios come up. People are capable of doing ANYTHING for different reasons.

So many of us grow up doing "the right thing"; going to school, getting a "good job", raising a family; all because it was expected of us.
Sometimes this is all one needs to be satisfied in life; sometimes not.
For those "nots" it may take many, many years for the realization to set in that there must be more to life, for them. Some are doctors, lawyers or other very successful people doing well, but they find themselves totally dissatisfied with their lives.
For others, they just can't find their niche in life. A multitude of jobs, relationships and for many, a wanderlust. With less resources than the group above, they have fewer options, but the goal is still the same.
So, to answer your question, I don't think there is any rule (age) on this one.

I'm 21 and I don't have an answer to what I want out of life, yet. The reality is things change too often to stay to just one life plan.

I know who I am now but I doubt I'll know tomorrow.

I dont think you can put an age on that question because you have to realize that for yourself at whatever age.

I think that knowing who you are and knowing what you want from life can come at different times.

It could take most of someones life before they truly know who they are. This is because people are always changing and growing.

Knowing what you want from life is different. That's something that most people have to decide early on. Like in or by the end of collage. But it's also something that can be discovered later in life.

I know who I am now, but I don't know who I'm going to be. And I found out what I wanted from life in my early 20s.

I discovered myself at 15, but I am not your average teenager, I've home schooled since 8th grade due to severe anorexia. After almost loosing my battle I discovered who I was. I think when you get close to passing away, youu start to critically think about life.

I would say that about eighty percent of life is luck. Being at the right place at the right time in order to take advantage of the situation. The important part is being prepared to take advantage of the opportunity when presented. That means, if you are a college graduate you keep in mind what opportunities may be available for you or that you can learn to fit yourself into.
If you don't have a skill that you have learned, then you will need to get as many learned skills as you can so that you can identify which one you might to take advantage of when opportunity presents itself.

I am 32 and i still dont know what the hell is goin to happen. i kinda know what i want. and i do know more of who i am.. but things still are up in the air. i think it takes time.

when you are young you think you know what you want you dont.

tip for anyone preteen to teen to say under 30. You think you know what you want at that age but it can change. the emotions and issues you think you deal with that may last forever will change too.

it takes time. what you want at 20 you may not want at 30.

best thing is to try to keep an open mind.

  • I would say as a kid. I haven't changed much since then. I've always known who I am and what I want.

In my experience: until I was 24 or so I had those doubts about who I was and what I wanted in life and all that crap... then I started to have a certain idea. But not doubting so much doesn't mean that your feelings on that are not mistaken. I think you never know for sure, but you can develop a clue about it and not go through life completely lost.
