Britneys consveratorship thoughts

So apparently in America which is supposed to be "land of the free" lmao you guys allow people to get stuck in these horrible conservatorships. Nice laws.
It really shocks me how it is possible when Britney is clearly being used. She's made to perform and be a judge on xfactor and shit but she's incapable of driving a car and handling her own money ?! Here people who are legit mentally challenged and stuff can't even have their rights taken away to that degree. Sure they can be assigned a person who handles their economy for them and stuff like that but only if it's truly necessary and there's no other solution such as a family member being able to help them out with certain things for example and it's nowhere near as strict. Freedom is the most important thing, you only strip criminals of their freedom and that's because it's a punishment! You don't punish people with mental health problems, you support them!
And who cares how she or anyone else for that matters spends their own hard earned money?! To me she doesn't sound mentally challenged, but rather incredibly strong. If I were her i'm not sure i'd still been alive, tbh, because what would the point be? And the fact that there's many celebrities who are truly unhinged out there and has been charged for things, constantly do and say crazy and offensive shit and can barely take proper care of themselves... And no one cares?! Why are they allowed?!
I'm not even a fan since I was a small kid but this thing is sad and it shows how stupid America is. Eat less junk fatties and stop shooting at things maybe you can fix your insane laws.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

That video marked me as a child, all those years ago. I had never seen a trans or gender-fluid-identifying person before who wasn't a strange local man with a very apparent mental disorder that you could see in the way he spoke and moved, so I was absolutely mystified by Chris Crocker.

It is very strange, and I'm not aware of any situation where someone that wasn't a direct threat to themselves or someone else isn't allowed to have agency over themselves. I'm admittedly not well versed in the specific situation but with so much money invloved I don't trust her "handlers" to have her best interest at heart.

She is an adult and should have a third party mediator, arbitrator, guardian ad-lidem type situation assigned to her by the courts if so desired.

I hate to sound so cynical if she really is a victim of some prison she really can't escape from, but part of me thinks -in this day and age-it could all be a publicity stunt to create buzz for an upcoming, FREEDOM tour!

I don't know a huge amount about this. I do know that there's a Britney fan-club out there which is convinced that she's being exploited and abused, but I suspect they don't know as much about the reality of her state of mind and mental competence as they believe they do.

The conservatorship system does seem very odd to me. I do understand that people can be incapable of handling their medical and financial affairs from birth or become incapable of doing so due to things like dementia and brain trauma. It seems obvious to me that there should be some way of protecting the interests of such people. But things get shaky when you're talking about protecting someone with a mental illness from their own decisions.

From what I understand of the recent Britney case, she was trying to get the conservatorship lifted, so I assume that how the system works is that once you are declared mentally incompetent, you have to prove that you are competent in order to take charge of your own affairs again. I wonder how many of us could prove that we are completely sane and competent to look after our own affairs if we were confronted with psychiatrists and lawyers who began with the assumption that we are not.

It would seem to me that a better arrangement would be for conservatorships to run for a specified period (say, two years), and then expire, the only way to renew the conservatorship being another hearing that starts from the assumption that the person is competent finding that they are not. Of course, even though Britney has not actually been locked up, I wouldn't be surprised if she is, in some senses, institutionalised since she's had so many of her freedoms taken away from her for so long.

I understand more than a million Americans are subject to conservatorship orders. The vast majority of those will be people who are truly incapable of looking after their own affairs, but it is obvious that there's huge scope for corruption, abuse and profiteering. I'm sure Britney's father must feel like he's won the lottery. My recollection is that the dude is stereotypical trailer park trash whose main skill was emptying whiskey bottles and he never succeeded in anything in life, but the conservatorship paid him very well to supposedly look after Britney's financial affairs.

I'll try to explain based on what I know of Conservatorships as I studied them with the expectation that I would have to go to court to be appointed as one for my mother. I didn't have to go to court as I was able to get my mother to agree that I had Medical Power of Attorney and the SS Administration gave me Financial Control after checking with her Doctor (who knew me). Everyone else just went along (but, there were no financial resources or contractual arrangements).

1st off - You've really got to be messed up for the court to approve it. Brittany has admitted that she was messed up and making bad decisions - that she volunteerly agreed to enter it without requiring the testimony of a bunch of professionals about her mental status, and that it helped her initially.

One of the stories from that period I remember is that she almost signed away the rights to all of her songs and everything when her father stepped in and set up the conservatorship. Keep in mind that the entertainment industry is full of real stories where artist did in fact sign a contract that had a clause transferring all of their rights to someone else. Many an entertainer lost everything and died broke because of such contract clauses.

I understand that Brittany still has about $60 Million and the rights to her music. That's likely one of the good things the Conservatorship did for her.

Once in such a conservatorship - you have to demonstrate basic mental competence to get out of it. The courts routinely ask for a status of mental competence (even for the elderly).

I cannot speak about her family living off of her except that the courts determine how much conservators get paid, and family members usually get paid less than professional conservators. So her dad is being paid by what the court considers reasonable for what he has been doing.

I can also assure you that no one forced Brittany into any new performance contracts. She had to agree on her own free will up front to those. But, she could then be forced, if needed, to complete the contract she agreed to (as would be anyone else); or pay the financial repercussions of not completing the contract. Most entertainers are more than willing to complete contracts without any pressure. What happened here that Britteny no longer wanted to do a performance series she had agreed to do. Was that really the conservators and her managers fault - or was it Brittany's fault? I don't know - but its a fair question.

I also understand that control of her medical and personal life was transferred from her father to an independent female conservator some years ago. Her father has nothing to do with those things.

As for the financial side: It is my understanding that the plan was to bring another professional conservator with the right kind of financial background to "co conservator" with her father for a year or two; and if Brittany and the Court was happy with that firm that her father would be removed and that the new firm would have full control on the financial side. So there was a plan there to remove her father from the financial side of things.

As I said before: To get out of this conservatorship it's up to Brittany to show that she is mentally competent and making reasonable decisions.

Most anyone can put on short acts in the public. We don't get to see what she is like the rest of the week.

I can say that in my opinion Brittany has acted in ways that show she is perhaps not rational and making good decisions.

The financial conservatorship was going to be transfer ed away in another year or two if Brittany liked the new company and the courts thought they were doing an adequate job.

Then Brittany got up in court and said a whole bunch of things. We don't know how much is true except that she clearly wants her father out of her financial affairs, and she wants out of the conservatorship.

The new company that was going to co-conserve her finances backed out.

Her music and performance manager quit.

Her Lawyer quite because what she said in court was much different that what she told them she was going to say. Lawyers tend not to want to represent clients that they cannot trust and depend on.

I'd rate that Brittany was her own worst enemy in that performance.

None of us actually know how mentally competent Brittany is to run her day to day activities. The Court has access to independent mental health professionals, and the court knows their past opinions, and can order a new evaluation.

Brittany was messed up in the past and the conservatorship helped her then. Getting out of conservatorships can be done and does occur (many conservatorships only last 3-12 months for a temporary situation). Some last a lifetime.

I'm not going to second guess the Judge overseeing this conservatorship.

Her family is terrible. They’ve been scamming here out of her money for years. People are allowed to have a mental breakdown. That shouldn’t have meant her useless brother gets a mansion and doesn’t have a job.

The fact that the judge denied her only makes me think the dad paid the judge off too. Now she’s gonna go back to court to the same judge. It’s just ridiculous.

    FREE BRITTNEY

I had no idea what you were talking about I had to read some stuff on google. I havent heard anything about Britney Spears since around 2012. Last I heard she was on drugs and making poor decisions. Is she doing any better? I couldn't find any interviews of her. It always seemed like the family exploited her and overworked her.

    • Wow thats crazy, it's on the news a lot and social media.
Her family is exploiting her, especially her dad. Her mom has barely spoken out though so I doubt she cares much.
Her dad has control over Britneys whole life, finances everything and Britney recently spoke out about it for the first time and said she'd like to sue her whole family and that she's not happy. I believe she's also said she wants to quit performing and she wants to move to the UK. I'm pretty sure she's doing fine if she wasn't forced against her will to take medication. She sounded coherent and determined for a supposedly insane person. It says it all too that she's been forced to perform all these years...Especially when she's not the one who has access to the money she earns...
