Can you draw

Can you draw a map of your neighborhood?

I recently read that many people cannot read maps. And now that computers and technology have made mapping more accessible, simple knowledge of ones surroundings have become limited. Add to this the fear of letting children roam the neighborhood unattended by parents, kids have no idea how to read a map, let alone draw one.

I love maps! And no matter how sophisticated technology becomes, I doubt the paper map will ever become obsolete. However the ability to read one is becoming more of an obscure practice.

The art of navigation is getting lost. What does that say about our lives in general? (hmm...another thought, but not the question I am asking here.)

My question, can you draw a map of your neighborhood? How well detailed is it? How much area does it cover? What main features would you highlight? The school, the post office, the 7-11, the crazy neighbor with the pink flamingos?

I remember drawing maps of my home as a kid. I lived on a lot of property so I mapped it out. I even made a treasure map. I buried a bag of shattered window glass...years later I went to look for it but never found it. My map failed me. :(

Before this gets any longer...is it normal to draw maps?

    I can draw blood...

I think I could draw a pretty darn good map of my 'hood. It would be colorful and, hey you know what!? I just might do this fun little activity tomorrow. I'm that much of a dweeb. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the project!

I have a laptop but I haven't had cable or internet for over a year and I'm in no rush to get it. I'm crazy like that.

The more people have technology at their disposal, the less we are required to use our senses, our awareness, our instincts. This will eventually cause people to become biologically inept.Being dependent on technology is not the state you want to be in. In an apocalyptic environment, most young people nowadays would be dead meat!

My visual memory (memory for the things I see, a.k.a. photographic memory) is absolute pants (awful) so no (I can't remember where things are where I live so I can't draw its map).

        What was wrong with that?

Saying that it is 'pants' sounds stupid to me.

I just realized how fucked I would be without my sat Nav in the car. In my own town where I grew up Lol. I know my way around the part of town I grew up in and could totally draw it all, but the rest... and where I currently live, forget about it.

My skill to draw my current geographical surroundings would probably be average or maybe just slightly above average compared to this generation I would think. Though google earth and similar apps are incredible, I like to look at actual maps and not just always rely on digital forms all the time.

I don't think I could ever rely completely on things like a car gps. Also, I haven't lived here my whole life. I could probably draw a map of the place where I grew up much better because (naturally) I had more time to memorize it.

Well, I did my house a few of times, but not my neighborhood. That sounds pretty fun! I think I'll try that sometime!

  • I'm excellent with maps. I could draw my neighborhood including all the houses in detail with few mistakes if any. When I was 2 years old I could put a puzzle of the states together and as a little kid knew all the countries. I have photographic memory which helps a lot with geography.
