Can you sue a website if you are banned on the grounds of your beliefs?

I found out that a website I was registered to deleted my account, and I can only suspect it was due to a thread I briefly joined about abortion. I made some critical comments regarding other comments that were made, and it was clear I was coming from an anti abortion perspective. I re-read the rules on the site and nothing I said violated them. I didn't threaten anyone, and I didn't even call anyone names (not that name calling was against the rules, and other people did it all the time). I re-registered to the site, and started a thread talking about how I seemed to have been unfairly banned, and then I was banned again. I don't know much about how free speech relates to websites, I would assume it's not possible to sue, but if by any chance there is a case, I would take it.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

That's not free speech. Free speech is protected to say shit in public and the like. If you are on someone's private website they can kick you off.

It is free speech in principle when you are banned for no reason. It's censorship.

So you're okay with the mass censorship that happens on all kinds of media?

No, it saddens me, but I think it's their choice. I am very much for free speech, even for my enemies, and if I ran a site like this one I would be for free speech, but it's still the owners choice. Look at twitter, Elon Musk bought it.

You can sue anybody for anything but in this case you would lose.

I personally don't think it would be worth it. If I felt I was unjustly banned from a site, I would just never go back and find a community more in line with my beliefs and accepting of me. Plus, suing them would take up more of your time and money than it's worth just to be able to post on a specific site when there are many others out there to choose from instead.

They would likely say it was for reasons other than personal beliefs. And it would depend on the nature of the website as well. If the point is to offer healthy cooking tips and you started talking about abortion, you would be banned.

At the end of the day, it's not worth it to sue. It would cost you a lot of money for a lawyer and there's no guarantee you'd actually get paid if you won.

Theres a case the supreme court is reviewing right now that might make that possible. Section 230 was written in 96 that gave social media companies immunity from lawsuits because it declared them a public forum. This means that currently they can not be sued if someone uses their public forum to slander someone. The owner of the forum (Or social media company) can not be sued for defamation and isnt liable for whats posted. But if they are censoring political speech it can be argued they should be legally catagorized as a publisher which means they can be sued for stuff thats on their site (just like any magazine or tv show) If this decision is upheld they will no longer be able to censor anything political or hateful because that will open them up to being sued. Under law they cant be declared a public forum but censor like a publisher. Section 230 was only supposed to be for deleting pornography and nudity and it says in the bill to only delete things "in good faith"

You do not have free speech protection on private websites who are within their rights to establish a code of behavior in order to have order. READ THE TERMS OF USE AND BE INFORMED! First amendment rights only apply in our institutions like schools, courts and is not in the workplace or in a private club or organization.

No, I'm anti censorship. I think private people should be allowed to host whatever views they like on their platforms.

I dislike when people don't allow free speech on their site, but fundementaly it's their choice as owner of the site.

Same thing happened to me. I was a member of an utau website called utaforum, and gave a warning to some kid who wanted to go on hormones, and she wanted to record her voice one time before it permanently changes, and all I did was comment saying how they might regret it and it will harm their bodies and irreversibly change it. Next day found out I got banned for "hate speech". All I was trying to do was protect the kid from mutilating their body, but I guess she'll find out I was right when it was too late.
