Capon: ignoring my thoughts, do you think it yuck or yum?

For the second year in a row, dad got us capon for Xmas. £70 for something about the same size as or smaller than a chicken with meat that was either dry or excessively fatty.
I love fatty meat but this fat wasn't nice.

In fact, I think it doesn't agree with me

You never see capons for sale in the UK, since the castration of cockerels is banned on animal welfare grounds.

The testes of male birds are internal, so castration requires a surgical procedure on the cockerel. And it's not just a case of making a little incision and scooping out the testes; they're located between the lowest pair of ribs, so after an incision is made, the ribs are spread and the testes are yanked out. In the States, this procedure is typically performed on fully conscious birds without any form of pain relief, an experienced caponizer on a production line can deal with 200 cockerels an hour, and it's not unusual for birds to die during the operation due to internal damage or following it due to infection.

Does knowing all that make the meat tastier in retrospect?

Animals raised for meat in the UK and the rest of Europe rarely have wonderful lives, but the USA allows animals to be treated in barbaric ways.

    • "Luckily", I'm not in the USA. Oddly, I'm in the UK where "capons" of a sort do exist but I doubt that actually caponned birds would be possible.

4WIW, I did not like it. Read the post for a little more.

BTW, thanks for the bird anatomy facts

P.S. I like pate. Tried foie gras at an old job and liked it.

Thirty minutes after reading this, my aunt called me to her house for capon. Ewwww

  • A castrated chicken fattened for eating

I had turducken a few times when I lived with my aunt and uncle, although I have no clue which meat I ate. I suspect turkey or chicken

Oh well, maybe he thinks it's unique and tasty. His wallet and house, right? Maybe you could try using social skills next year to get a turkey or ham or something

    • We used to have turkey, we've had mixed-bird and one year we had goose.

No idea where my dad's fascination with Capon comes frpm

      • You know, I bet a nice glazed goose or duck is actually quite good if prepared correctly. Even when they cut the head off in A Christmas Story it actually looked good

I imagine it to be thinner than how chicken is to beef, if that makes sense. Comes off in strips. A little dry, maybe chewy, but with a more palatable taste than chicken, maybe tastes a little like thyme or one of those green herbs. Really makes me curious

      • Turns out capon was once a Christmas tradition. Joy 🙄
