Cast iron pan starting to show silver metal

I have this supposedly cast iron frying pan that is quite heavy, made in China (Tramontina brand). I see some slightly silver color where I scraped gunk off with a knife. Other parts show rust which is normal. Just wondering if this pan really is pure iron, or if it has an iron coating and some other weird mix of metal as a core (hopefully not lead).

maybe an aluminum core cast into the bottom for better heat transfer

if youre worried about lead theres swabs to test for it at hardware stores but it seems unlikely

then again who knows what those crazy chinese would pull

No way its aluminium. It'd be way more expensive than iron.

I think the Chinese make their export cookware from an amalgam of mercury, lead & asbestos with a little arsenic for seasoning.

I have two that I cook in religiously. I’ve never seen a shiny metal.

if it shows silver its not real cast iron but thats what you get for buying china!

What you've got is pot metal(which may contain lead) with black iron paint on it. It may also contain cadmium which is more toxic than lead. Throw it out.
