If you ever become a parent, you'll probably discover it does weird things to your brain. Being solely responsible for the well-being and survival of your own stupid little human who sometimes seems determined to maim or kill themselves can make you start to see the world as a much more dangerous place.
Melanoma is nasty, and the link between UV damage to skin and melanoma is well established. The media loves stories where things which were once considered safe and perfectly normal are shown to actually be very dangerous. Most people absorb only the headlines and they lack the curiosity that would make them look deeper into such reports. Even if they do investigate, the odds are that they don't have enough understanding of science and statistics to really understand what researchers have found.
So lots of parents believe children being exposed to any sun is dangerous. The irony is that chronic Vitamin D deficiency not only causes rickets in kids, it is also linked with other serious health problems later in life.
And... A lack of vitamin D is also unhealthy for the overall immune system and hurts in protecting from all covids. Also randomly specifically, rickets as well.
Ive noticed that too they like to throw it in your face.
"Have you been getting 8 hours of sleep a night?... chances are you have brain cancer!!"
*gives catnip*
Oh and PS if you're the human equivalent of an indoor one then I'm the opposite.
Strange fact: Cats, dogs and other furry mammals get some Vitamin D from their food, but most of it from grooming themselves. UV light converts some of the oils that their skin secretes into Vitamin D, and they then lick it off when they groom themselves.
All humans make Vitamin D in their skin when it's exposed to UV radiation. The lack of pigmentation in the skin of redheads does mean they need less exposure to get what they need than those with darker skin.
Just give them a vitamin D supplement. Children are too busy with video games these days.
