Christians: ok with divorce, but not gay marriage?

It's specifically stated in the Bible, by Jesus himself, that divorce isn't okay. It's mentioned in maybe four verses in the entire Bible the homosexuality is a sin -- yet some Christians think it's ok to get a divorce but gay marriage isn't? Why

I'm specifically thinking of my roommate when I think about this: she comes from a heavily Christian family, and her parents are divorced. But she's opposed to gay marriage, even though Jesus never said anything about gay marriage or homosexuality when he did oppose divorce.

is it normal that I think this is hypocritical? That some Christians follow or interpret one part of the Bible but completely ignore another part of the Bible?

The bible "GOD" said that if a couple wants to split then they can give one another papers of divorcement, but, u can no longer have sex. U may separate from your spouse if u feel it necessary, but you may not have sex or get married again until one or the other dies. Sex outside of marriage is a sin; gay sex is an abomination. Getting divorced is not wrong/sin. Having sex or getting remarried after a divorce when u already promised YHWH "till death do u part" and your original spouse is still alive is a sin b/c u broke your promise to GOD, not your spouse. JESUS never said you could not get divorced. HE said never break a promise u make to GOD. Marriage is not u or 2 people making a promise 2 one another. They should have already discussed that b4 the marriage ceremony. That ceremony is symbolic of the extremely high regard we have of GOD, as well as our/your invite into your lives/relationship/family. Marriage is a promise to GOD, not your spouse.

I don't think it should matter to anyone else what you and your spouse decides to do or what gender your spouse happens to be. None of my business, and none of anyone else's.

The reason why Christians get so hung up on the gay marriage issue? Because of the example of Sodom and Gomorrah. A society that tolerates and encourages homosexuality is doomed to end up like them. Not to say that fire and brimstone will begin raining down, but that we will be judged by God.

BTW, there are many Bible verses in both the OT and NT that explicitly discuss homosexuality. And it is always conveyed as one of the more serious sins.

Whenever christians argue about the bible, I ask myself if they even read and understand that damn thing. There is so much stuff that EVERYONE is doing today, yet forbidden by the bible, but christians get hung up on gay marriage, which isn't even mentioned at all.

Actually the bible specifically says divorce is *allowed*. Not good, but allowed. It bans remarrying (other than to the same person) though.

It is normal, and rightly accepted for you to think so. It is true that there are many Christian hyprocrites, as well as athiest hypocrites, muslim hypocrites, every group is going to have hypocrites.

Technically they are against both. It's just that divorces have become so common they basically gave up while the legalization of gay marriage is still an active topic that they hope to have some influence over. When my parents were young you could get expelled from a church for divorcing because of non-biblical reasons.

One thing you have to remember is cultural context. Back in biblical times a man who divorced his wife wasn't just splitting up, he was basically casting her out with no means of survival and no protection. Its not like she would just get alimony and go hang out at the singles bar. Divorce was equivalent to social exile and leaving the woman with nothing.
SO, its not exactly the same these days.
As for gay marriage, my personal thought is hey at least they want to be monogamous. Live and let live, its not up to me to judge.

I think every literal implication of the bible is quite unworkable. The bible contradicts itself on many points. It also states things like: that you have to avoid women during their period, that it's okay to get your slaves from neighbouring countries, that it's not allowed to wear mixed fabrics, ...

Depends on the country you're from; America no longer has a negative stigma on divorce, while Philippines frowns upon it to the point where it's so difficult to get it.
