Clean the belly button with neosporin?

So lately I've been noticing a gnarly smell that's coming from my belly button, along with it being sore and red. from everything I've read it seems like an infection of some sort. I've read that cleaning the button with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide can work, along with drying it properly. but all I have is Neosporin. the big issue is that i don't know if its bacterial or fungal, which is why I'm so skeptical of it. But would it be a good idea to clean it with neosporin? I realize this is gross, but i'm curious as to the best method of cleaning it, thanks

Neosporin is not a cleaner or antibacterial agent. You'd do just as well cleaning it with Vaseline. Spend a few bucks on rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, or even soap.

That's definitely a type of infection. Stop playing around and see a doctor!

Truth be told, a soak in hydrogen peroxide (3%) followed by an isopropyl alcohol (over 50%) wash will kill just about any topical microorganisms.

Both are available cheaply at dollar stores, and drug stores. They are cheap and readily available.

here is a cheap and easy fix! buy a small bottle of tea tree oil. Dip in a Q-tip and use that and Voila.. cure. Plus it is also a homeopathic remedy for such things as toenail fungus, sore gums, also athletes foot, and many other things.

Scrub it when you go to get a bath or shower. It ought to smell cleaner.

Neosporin IS an ANTIBACTERIAL ointment. But you really need to find out what's causing this change in your body if you are bathing daily.

Clean with soap and hot water. If it's painful or you notice pus or a strange smell, go to your doctor.
