College is making me depressed and i want to drop out. any thoughts?

Hey all!

I started going to college at age 17, right now I'm 20. I still have three years to go. As you can guess by the title, I'm sick of it. I feel like I'm spending the best years of my life doing useless bullcrap.

I have a lot of 'filler' courses that don't teach me anything, but I'm required to take them anyway. At the end of the day, I can't name one thing I've learned. This frustrates me a lot.

Now, I do have some marketable skills. I spent a lot of my spare time following seminars to teach myself how to write articles, webdesign, photography, etc. Still, all I hear from my peers is that no employer will hire me if I don't get a degree.

I'm in a terrible rut. I'm getting depressed, and my motivation is slipping away. I just want to quit college and do some actual work. Become a journalist or something. But people say I'll never get a job interview without a degree.

So I have two questions for you.

1. How can I convince my parents that spending the next three years in college will only make me a depressed zombie?

2. Is college really worth it? Even if it deprives me of all passion, should I still press on and get a degree?

I can relate to you completely. I despise College very intensely and I can't stand it either. The School System is just so flawed beyond belief and it doesn't make any sense. Why do people have to learn subjects that don't have any real value for most in the working world and why does it have to take years to get a Degree? In this bad economy people need better opportunities NOW.

Despite your frustrations though and as much as I hate to say it, I strongly believe that it is not convenient for you to quit College at this time. Even though it's really stupid, School is one of the most reliable ways to secure better job opportunities. My advice would be to continue with school until you have a clear view of what you want to accomplish and/or you've secured something that you can survive on that makes you happy.

Have you ever thought about becoming an Entrepreneur? This is my ultimate goal. Here's my reasoning for wanting to become one: There's a Company. You have the Employees, Managers, Vice Presidents, Executive Secretary and CEO. Even though these are all different jobs with different levels of responsibilities, the one thing all of these positions share in common is that the people in them can be fired or replaced at will by one person who is untouchable. The Owner. The Owner is the only person that this cannot happen to and this is what I want to be, the Owner of my own Business. The only person I'd have to answer to is myself, I make all the decisions and I have complete freedom to do as I please. I already placed an order for my customized products 5 days ago and within the next month it should be ready to sell.

It's not going to be easy though. No matter how intelligent, experienced and well-educated you are, if you're starting out for the first time it's gonna be difficult for you no matter what. If you live in or near Los Angeles, California and if money is an issue I know a place that can help. It's a Charitable Organization (Not a Bank or Business) that gives Interest-Free Loans. They have very flexible monthly payment plans, you don't have to have good credit (or any credit for that matter) and once you've paid off your loan you can apply for another one again (And keep doing it too). It's called the, " Jewish Free Loan Association ". I've been there myself, have no credit history and got approved for a $2,000 Loan to pay rent with monthly payment plans of $100 each month. It doesn't get any easier then that. However, they offer small business loans up to $15,000. Give them a try if you live in the area and if you're interested in starting something on your own.

    Best of luck to you.

  • Yeah, I started the college thing... got accepted into a competitive radiology program. As I was beginning that program an opportunity came up for me to travel the world. That was something I really wanted to do in my lifetime, and when better then NOW when I'm young?? I thought about finishing schooling for the *magic* degree, but came to a certain realization: If I finished school, the opportunity might not be there, and (above all) I realized that radiology is so ridden on technology these days that by the time I got back, my degree would be useless and I would have to go back to school again.... and why in hell would I want to do that twice? So, I'm out here, working on a sailboat and getting a hell of an education that I could have never gotten in school. And, the best part is I can always go back... and am not swimming in the debt of college tuition....and it's 80 degrees in the Caribbean.... Anyway, I can't tell you which way you should go... but have fun doing it! It's your life.

You don't know the meaning of the word "unhappy." You think you're having it bad now, wait until you get out into the real world without an education and can't get a job! (Even people with a college degree today have a tough time and those without are usually condemned to a lifetime of low-level, low-paying jobs and have to scrimp, scrape and do without until the day they die!)Obviously, you don't think so, but this is about as good as it gets. Stop whining, stay in school and make the most of it!

I hear ya. I just changed my major effectively buying me another year of college. The good news is that I only have two General Ed classes left and next semester, I'll be taking mainly Business and Economics classes but it's tough to balance work and school

I am, in a way, demotivated myself however, I have a lot of personal reasons for getiing a degree so after this semester, I'll be able to get an Associate's if I'm just that burnt out. College is going to be harder for you, though, especially if you're not into the idea of getting a degree. I'd consider staying because your friend has a point. Without a degree, it's difficult to even get an interview for a professional position these days unless you have a sturdy pair of knee pads.

    • I'm afraid you're right. I just wish I could take my college exams whenever I want to, instead of always waiting 'till the end of the semester. I learn more by myself than in classes, so I don't think it'd be a problem.

Unfortunately, there's no way for me to get my degree any faster. I detest that I have to do things the slow way, and that's why I want to quit.

Don't quit. You don't want to realize how important the degree was when you're 30 and you have kids and going to college will be a huge inconvenience. Try talking to some people in your line of work before taking this advice though. Most likely you'll need the degree though.

If your fast enought to take your college exams whenever you want , can't you just skip classe to work on personal more motivating projects? Then just show up at the exam or are you required a minimum attendance?

So you are going to be taking 6 years? Are you going for masters? That is sadly how school is. Even if it is not necessary and pointless you are forced into it. Even if you are 15 and failing everything they will push you on through(BY LAW). Even if you know each year you fail. Even if each year you learn nothing.Even if Each year you get a beating from someone who thinks you are not cool enough. Even if you are actually too smart for the school you are going too. That is the sad world we live in. Forced to waste our time when we could be doing something better. Why I think school should be a choice not a prison.

Look at this at a purely logical point of view. My advice is to suck it up and stick it out. You've already spent 3 years spending money on college and if you quit now it would have been all a waste and it will look absolutely awful on a CV.

Anyway, I was the exact same as you, I hated Uni for the first two years and desperately wanted to quit. But I didn't because of the money. Last year I loved it. Joined loads of sports, got smashed every week, went out, fucked, had an amazing time.

College should be the best time of your life. It's not all about the shit course. It's about the social life too. Make the most of this, 9-5 jobs are not better than college.

I just strongly dislike most college students so if/when I do go to college that'll be my problem.

I hate / dislike most of the students and professors here! Most of the students here are so annoying, immature, childish and loud! Everytime I go to my college, I feel stressed, depressed and have lots of anxiety since I dislike everything here! It's like I chose the wrong school and major at the same time! I wish there's a job for college undergraduates like me and high school graduates as well... College is not for everyone. Having a year off or a short break is not bad to recover yourself and have more preparations... I wished my parents just understand my situation and my anxiety / stress as well... My school always keeps on asking lots of money and their process is not good / kinda slow to be honest! It's really hard and unfair in my situation... :(

I hate / dislike most of the students and professors in my college and I really feel depressed here every single day. Maybe I just chose the wrong school and major... If only there's a job for college undergraduates or high school graduates... I'm graduating but I still feel stressed and have lots of anxiety everytime that I'm in my college... I wish I could have studied abroad, but it's more expensive in the US or other countries... :[ It's nice to take a year off or a break and come back anytime when you are emotionally and mentally ready... I wished my parents just understand my situation and anxiety / stress... :|

what kind of college requires six years to get a degree, if you only take like 12 credits a semester, disregard my statement. But does 12 credits wear you down so much????

    • I studied something else first, but I quit it since I found it uninteresting. Problem is, I can't keep changing my course.

I take 30 credits each semester. It doesn't wear me down because it's too much work, it wears me down because I find it extremely boring and monotonous. Even though my grades are okay, I don't want to do it anymore.

No matter how many hobbies I have on the side, I feel like I'm in a terrible rut. I'd like to get a part-time job, but I can't since I have to go to class during the daytime.

(Note that I don't go to American college. I live in Belgium, things are different here.)

ohh i see now, well the European school system is pretty neat. I known some cases like youra where people will basically live in school during the daytime. And the work is pretty much daily, i would totally slack there. My day is half compared to yours, my apologies. Have for instance thought about the exchance program to see uf you find some interest in a foreing culture, or maybe realize how much you actually miss your place, either way it will clear your mind where you will get a slight grasp of where you should belong. Belonging is one of the basic human needs, my guess is that you can't find that balance b/c you are giving to much thought to the school situation. I don't know how it works in your culture, things do differ, but if i was you at 20 I would move on for about a year on my own and see how i like it.
