Competitive Cheerleading isn't a sport. I don't want to devalue it, it's still a rigorous and worthwhile pursuit, but I have strong feelings about how sports and competitions should be defined. Sports involve competition, but they also involve simultaneous play, in which the actions of one team can have an effect on those of the other team.
In competitive Cheerleading the acts are not done simultaneously and you aren't allowed to do anything indirectly or directly to interfere with the other team's routine. By definition that makes it a competition, not a sport.
Still a perfectly worthwhile, strenuous endeavor though. I'm not hating on it, I'm just sayin'.
I cheer at my middle school for the basketball team and everyone always tells me how cheerleading is "not a sport". My argument is that it is...WHEN... You compete... :) yup I love it and going to comp. This year!
