Unplug it. And leave it unplugged. It won't get hot anymore.

If it's a desktop, open it up and vacuum out the dust. Check the fans too. Make sure the fan is free of dust and that it actually turns on when you start the computer.

If it's a laptop, make sure the fans works... if not you may need more intensive help.

In the meantime you may be able to help it with a cooling mat - I recommend active cooling.... now most of those are USB powered which I don't really agree with - I mean if the computer is overheating then adding on another power drain will help it? But that's why I have my cooling mat attached to a USB/outlet adapter.

And for either laptop or desktop, if you're overclocking the CPU... that will affect your temperatures too.

    Problem: Insufficient cooling.
    Solution: Upgrade your cooling.

Try updating the bios and see if that could help.

Maybe you have insufficient cooling for the upgraded parts.

  • What kind of desktop is it?
If it is an iMac, then it is normal.

I have two laptops, both of which get hot really fast. One of them singed a hole in my jeans, it hurt. I recommend that you either upgrade or clean out your fan(s) and filter(s). What most people don't know is that you're actually supposed to do this once a year. My fan is basically broken and needs to be upgraded soon, otherwise I will risk melting some stuff.

You should stop giving your computer strip-teases.

Specifically, what upgrades did you get? Which of them (not the PC's case, that's a knock-on effect) get hot? CPU, GPU, Northbridge (if not CPU-based) or hard disk? Is there any dust in the case? What type of cooling do you have? Have you checked fan speeds and component temperatures in the BIOS? Have you spoken to the person who installed the upgrades about cooling issues?

Excess heat will shorten the life of many components. Most you can replace, except for the data on your hard disk. If your system is running hot, make yourself an up to date backup as soon as you can.

Download the nvidia system monitor or the amd equivelent then you will be able to monitor the temperature and set the fans accordingly. But I wouldn't worry about it unless it's getting upto the high 80s when it's just sat idle.
