Cringe over drunk driving

I rarely drink and if I do its at home because on two occasions I blacked out somewhere and ended up waking up in my own bed with 0 recollection of how I got there.

On one occasion I was at a friends house and last remember being drunk and having a good time. My friend later told me I left at 1am. I woke up the next morning in a church parking lot at about 8:30am in my car with my car still running. And this church parkinglot was a place that cops loved to sit at. I have no idea how I got there or when and how I didnt get caught sleeping there by the cops. The church was only about 3 miles from my house.

On another occasion this was actually only a few months ago I went to a bar and last I recall I was buying beers and drank a flask of whiskey. Dont remember ANYTHING else. Woke up in my bed the next morning and my wife was furious. I had came in at 3 in the morning apparently and pissed in the floor trying to hit the toilet. And was completely out of it. Again I have no idea how I got home.

At this point I never even drink anywhere and would like to be able to go out and have a good time. But we do not have uber or taxies where I live you have to drive to get anywhere.

    You have made a wise decision based on your personal reaction to alcohol.

    I made a similar decision many decades ago for different reasons to be a dedicated non-alcoholic, and have never regretted not drinking alcohol.

    You can have a great life... without alcohol.

    Go for it!

    I hope you'll never do that again, I know you may not be able to control yourself when drunk but you can plan not to take the risk of going to a pub/party with your car, when you know that you could drive home drunk afterwards.

    Drink drivers are absolutely disgusting, they're putting innocent people's lives in serious danger. If they were just putting their own life at risk I'd say it's stupid, but if they wanna be stupid then then it's their life. But no one has any right to gamble with other people's lives. It's honestly just utterly immoral and repugnant.

    My understanding is that it's generally accepted that blackouts don't _necessarily_ mean that the person who has one has a serious substance abuse problem, but they could. Memory loss after drinking definitely does mean that the person consumed more alcohol than their body could handle, and people in that state can do some seriously stupid - sometimes lethally stupid - things.

    It's unfortunate that you're apparently incapable of drinking in moderation in public. What mystifies me is how you're apparently intelligent and responsible enough to resolve that you'll never again drink outside of home, and yet you seem fixated on the idea that getting drunk is necessary in order for you to "have a good time".

    I will grant you that being sober - or even relatively sober - in the company of a bunch of people who are shitfaced is rarely a "good time"; a few people are amusing and better company when their inhibitions have been lowered a bit by a little booze, but the vast majority of drunks are obnoxious, physically violent or just plain fucking stupid. And who in their right mind can cope with assholes like that when sober?

      A lot of people like to go out to bars and have a good time after a long week of work. Many people also get quite drunk and make new friends. If you can't understand how people like this maybe you have a giant stick up your ass.
