I hate to be the mean judge but it looks like something you'd see in a high school art class. That being said I still think it is good. It's like an A project in art class. I gave it a 7 just based on skill. It's hard to say because it isn't my style. But I respect anyone that does art.

Totally agree, although I gave it a 6 because it's better than OK but, to me, not very inspiring.

I wouldn't feel bad about being honest and not declaring it a masterpiece - the OP did ask for a critique, presumably he / she (I'm going to guess she) must want honesty :) Also, as an artist myself I know that if everybody is endlessly polite about the artwork you produce, you end up thinking you're much better than you are and end up unable to withstand genuine criticism.

I do appreciate the honesty :) Disthing is right about people being overly nice, so when I do get a piece of "meanness" I greatly appreciate it, as long as it's an honest opinion and not coming from the mouth of my mom or my boyfriend (for some reason I can't take their criticisms well).

I actually thought you were being nice... at least you didn't call it "Shit". haha. What is your style, anyway?

Hmmm, well it's hard to say. My style is all over the place. Although, I think the colors look like liquid pearls. Which is pretty neat. Are you the one with the poll and the 4 paintings a little while back that I called shit? If so this is a lot better than those :) And if I am being 100% honest, I hate the title. :)

i Like it. was it inspired by Vincent van Gogh's "The Starry Night"?

    Comment Hidden ( show )

    • myboyfriendsbitch

Nah. It is just a free-minded, experimental work that became what it is, whatever it is. I work more intuitively and my thoughts inspire me more than anything. I actually don't even see the likeness to Van Gogh. I don't know if i could ever master his impasto technique.well, i probably could get close if i tried, but i try to preserve my paint too much.

      • disthing

I have to agree with theaverageatheist about the title.

From my experience, it's better to let the painting do the talking. Your title is very teenage, in that it's a bold statement, but also very clichéd and self-conscious.

That's not to say you weren't entirely genuine and well-meaning when giving it its name though. I'm just explaining my response to the title from an ignorant voyeur's perspective, without any understanding of the painting's meaning (if it has one) :)

        • myboyfriendsbitch

Yeah, honestly I don't think I was ever very comfortable with the title. I think it fits, but it could definitely be better. I've never been too good with naming things that I love.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
      • theaverageatheist

it's a little too direct, too banal. people might not take it serious. If you get a good or clever title it will make a bigger imprint, and people will remember.

Pick a few of the black bars to stretch farther upward. They seem very constrained. The composition gets really wonky on the right edge. The blue area on the right behind the figure is lost because it's not on a line of interest. Overall good choice of colors. I think it's ok. If you're a highschool student I'd say it's really good. I can't say too much because the file is tiny.

But why ask the people of INN? It's not an art community.

Thanks for the good suggestions. There seems to be many artists, or art-minded people here, so why not ask? I have had it critiqued in school, i just wanted to get more open opinions from people who aren't afraid to hurt my feelings.

since it's so small, it's hard to see but from afar, i like the colors. there's something about the flow of it though. maybe the area behind the black blades of grass (grass is what i initially thought of anyway), make it blend better with the rest of it... and the teal area on the right maybe have it flow into the background a little less abruptly? i guess it's what you'd call the 'balance' of it is off. but that's just my opinion. if you're happy with it, why care what anyone else thinks? :)

I like this a lot. I don't really ''understand'' art from the perspective of an artist and what to look for in an art piece. I wish I knew more about art, but from my perspective this is beautiful and interesting to look at!

You don't need to be an artist, or an artist-expert, also known as "arrogant bigots who pretend to know everything", to appriciate true beauty. Hell, the experts don't know shit. I recreated a painting that was hanging in a display with paint.

      It was exactly like http://tinypic.com/r/16bf414/6

Now you tell me, how is that art?
PS. I just made that on Paint.

Anyway, I love the OP's painting. I'd even buy it if I could ;c.
