Daylight savings time

Is anyone else puzzled at how, with everything going on right now, this seems to be such a big concern to the US government?

Also, do some people truly believe that the actual amount of hours of daylight will change?

I just fail to understand why this seems to be a "pressing" issue while everything else that is vastly more important seems to be falling apart at the moment.

It was implemted in WW II as it was thought that changing the clocks 1 hour in the winter would save heating oil (which was in short supply with the war going on).

Decades ago they realized that it did not save any heating fuel usage...

I don't know why they did not discontinue it after WW II. That's when the nonsense about saving an hour of daylight came about.

Of all the things we have to deal with they pick this one. And making permanent is a bad idea. Kids in the northern latitudes will wait for school buses in the dark, increasing the chances they’ll get hit by cars, and peoples bodies won’t cycle to the daylight.

changing the clock every year is not needed. it was tried years ago, but now everything is open 24/7, lights are always on and the heat always run, changing the clock does not save anything only confuses people. pick one and leave it alone

Funnily enough changing the clock is what got me extra time behind the wheel for cdl training. Any extra driving is a god send since you are crunching to learn as fast as possible. The instructor forgot to set his watch forward.

You're right that there are many other things that require far more urgent attention at the moment, but it's not like the government of any country can only deal with one thing at a time.

I don't live in the USA, so I have no idea if the issue truly is a "big thing" in the States. However, I suspect that this is exactly the sort of thing that a certain portion of the media would focus on as a part of their campaign to portray their political opponents - or even politicians in general - as being out of touch with reality and obsessed with irrelevant stuff.

In the UK, there is occasional low-level debate about daylight savings time. It's one of those issues where there are valid arguments and statistics supporting both sides, so I suspect we'll continue as we are for the foreseeable future.

Seriously, crime is on the rise, illegals are pouring over our borders, we're on the verge of WW3 and some idiots in Congress are thinking about daylight savings time. WTF. It's insane.

They tried it in the 1970's. At first people were in favor of it. They soon changed their minds and switched back.
