Let's say that you're on a deserted island 300 miles off the coast of a country you don't know about. You're the first person to have discovered this island, and therefore nobody knows you're there. You've found yourself on this island with no personal belongings or useful material things.

Fortunately for you however, you possess a magical gift card that allows you to choose 1 item(s) from a list of item(s) that you can either have to aid you in survival, or give you help in trying to leave the island. What will you choose?

    The cellphone. Either it will have GPS built in or the phone can be triangulated from pinging the cell towers. I'd call the White House and tell them I'm a terrorist and I want to kill the president.

    a survival knife :) you can build shelter, begin fire, make traps and or hunt with it. it really is one if not the one most useful things in a survival situation while allot of other things are useful a knife is almost impossible to survive without (you can make one but it's allot of work)
    or since it's magical a one way portal back to my room :)

    Cellphone. Because i can call the international emergency number (112) and as soon as they answer, tell them to get the coordinates of the phone (its usually accurate to within 200m), now they know my approximate location and should be able to send a rescue team to save me.

    As long as I know the date (I'm assuming I'm not unconscious when I arrive on the island) and have access to something I can write in (soil, sand, etc.) and a stick, I can work out my rough location within 24 hours. If I don't know the date, I can do it within three to six months (depending what time of year it is).

    Knowing my location determines my next course of action. If dead reckoning is liable to lead me to land before whatever water I can carry is depleted, I build a boat out of what I can. If not, I build shelter.

    In either case, the rope and the chainsaw is the most useful. Although a calculator would also help. Bounding the residuals from Taylor polynomials with a stick in the sand is not my idea of fun. Actually, what am I saying? It completely is! :)

          You have no beginning reference and you have no map (you picked the chainsaw). It doesn't say if you have a timepiece or any way to position from Greenwich. You have a compass you haven't disclosed?

          I guess you want to use Fourier also?

            You also have no access to Tom Hanks films which may tell you the only way to determine longitude is by a (broken) wristwatch and a radio. You don't need a map, and you don't need a radio, and you don't need Fourier transforms. The Taylor series approximation of sin(x), however, is invaluable (clue) as is a working knowledge of celestial mechanics. The inner teacher in me wants to see you find a way of working this out.

            One concession I will make is that if you don't know the date to within six months, you could be in one of two antipodal locations on the earth and not know which.

    Food and water. I have always wanted to be stuck on a deserted island. The food and water will be good to survive on until you find another usage of food eg fish, animals, fruit etc.
