Did your school play the national anthem?

So my dad told me today that some schools don't play the national anthem. I'm in grade 12 and all through out my life Oh Canada is played at the start of the day. My dad said that in bigger cities that schools don't play the national anthem because it may offend some people who aren't from Canada. This to me is CRAZY! I have never been to a school where they don't play the national anthem and my dad was in the military so we moved around a lot when I was a kid. But maybe times have changed in 7 years. Oh and also here in Canada it's Rememberance Day today and some places in Canada they don't get the day off to remember those who fought for are freedom! I think it's horrible how 'politically correct' everything is to the point where you can't celebrate living in the country you live in! So my question is when you were in school/ at you kids school do/did they play the national anthem?
P.S. If you are older and have kids answer if they play the national anthem at their school.

Other 12

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

In fourteen years of schooling, I never heard the national anthem once, and never saw either the UK flag or the English flag. We did observe the minute's silence on Remembrance Day, though. I still do.

Not that I can remember, we used to recite "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; One nation, Under god, Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Sounds nothing like what America stands for these days, lol sad.

  • unfortunately my school plays the american national anthem every single morning no matter what. we have to stand up during it, and the worst part is that the teachers find all different versions of the songs that are all very long. So everybody is like "when the f*** is this one gonna end?!" while we have been standing there for several minutes listening.

In Australia, the primary schools and secondary schools I went do did the Australian National Anthem at every school assembly. No question. Even if we were going to run out of time if we didn't get presentations done on time, it had to be done and everyone has to stand and sing it to the three flags (Australian, Indigenous Australian, and United Nations flags). Though not everyday does it get sung, we still had the flags get pulled up everyday.

Visiting my brother's primary schools at award ceremonies and other stuff, they still did the national anthem- standing up, singing, flags, and all of that. It was a necessity and if you couldn't sing the last verse (which most people can't or don't know it. Usually it's the first verse is all that's sung in most places- which is BULL), you were given the 'stink eye'. Most don't care that you don't know the last verse but it's definitely expected that you know and learn the first verse at least!

Those who could sing all of the verses were regarded patriotic for taking time to learn it and stand by the words. And if your religion doesn't let you, we don't really care that much and send you off to the library or something- we respect your religion and we're not going to impose on you. It's school- there's going to be variations and differences. Respect it.

Although the anthem doesn't get done all the time, it's a big deal. Not having it done when necessary is wrong. And changing it to suit catholic schools or suit anything is almost like a crime.

We always have days off when it comes to respecting the war veterans, doing National Day, and all of that. Always, the flags go up and the anthem would be held here and there and the main venue in the city is broadcasted on the television or radio.

Political correctness on the other hand is a whole new ball game. I think it's been settled a few years back. Still a bit shaky but we're on equal ground.

Mine did, but I never sang along. I would sing "Ol' Mcdonald" instead, or sometimes this song by the Spice Girls. I forget what it was called. I would do so very loudly, and was scolded every day.

We never do in the UK. We have no national pride here, but I like it that way. We had a few songs on Rememberance Day, but not the National Anthem.
