Do people ever really recover from opioid addiction?

My boyfriend’s struggle with heroin has been the most taxing and depressing situation I’ve ever witnessed. He was 2 years clean before falling back in about 6 months ago.

I was with him all through his quitting. I came home one day to him passed out in the shower and that was the last straw for me to force him into rehab.

The pleading for me to let him get back into drugs, I’ve never seen him cry before until then. I love him with everything in me, but I’m afraid he’s only got so much time left if he keeps this up.
He’s 27, I’m 24, we’ve been together for 6 years now. I found out I was pregnant 5 days ago.

    Yes its very possible to recover, get him checked into a methadone clinic before he dies of an OD or due to the shit street heroin is adulterated with. The real damage is done by the shit its cut with(adulterants can be harmless to very dangerous).

    Impossible to completely quit. Probably best to help him commit suicide and just end it already.

    Tell him to get on methadone or Suboxone. I've been on Suboxone for almost 10 years and haven't used opiates at all. If he doesn't quit walk away. Your life will be miserable as long as he keeps using

    Not sure about opioids but chemical addiction in general never fully goes away.
    I learned that when I was off cigarettes for one and a half years and just one day said "Fuck it, I need a smoke".

    What happens is at first when we decide to quit our addictions, we are pumped, feeling good, feeling strong. We are motivated even through the cravings. The cravings become less and less but sometimes just hit hard out of nowhere. Eventually we think we can have just a little but then before we know it, we are back at the same quantity as before.

    What is going to have to happen for you and him is this - quitting and getting help is going to be a part of life for a while.

    I never understood how someone could kick a habit for several months to several years and go back. But then I did it with my stupid-ass cancer sticks.

    Recovery is possible but as with every addiction, it will be something that needs to be managed for the rest of his life. There are a lot of options available but it's not going to be something that just goes away.

    He needs to not only go to rehab, but he needs to go to Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and will probably need to see a therapist.
