Do y'all think this is a cool name for a kid?

Okay so, this is just a question cause I am curious, I am like 21 and have no partner so i ain't having kids yet. This is all hypothetical but it came to my mind!!!

I want a cool name for a kid and it's not like i want it to b different from anyone, I have other more common ideas bUT!!! this just sounds so cool in my mind but i wanna know what y'all think.

So...

Obsidian.

Naming a kid (regardless of gender) Obsidian.

I think it's cool as hell!

First of all bc i have seen that obsidian is present in a lot of things that i absolutely love (it's a special episode from Adventure Time, you use it in Minecraft, in Steven Universe) and i just think it's a dope ass name.

People can call my kid, Sid, or Dian (like Diane).

OPINIONS!!!??

    That's horrendous. Don't become a parent.

I'll just add my insignificant opinion.

As an older person with grown children, I'm glad we didn't use a creative and unusual name we had thought and really planned on using. We were both educated and close to graduation from college when our first was due. We thought about putting that education to work and looked for latin terms that had significant meaning. Something like Regium Adamas we justified it thinking they will call them Regina, Reggie, or Adam.

Our children are very glad we dumbed down and used more common names. Actually family names, that were used by grandparents, parents, or great grandparents. They are actually very proud of their names and family attachment.

Point being, getting creative may seem cute and different when we are 25 but it is their name and will affect them a lot more than you think. When they are 25 they will tell you how stupid it was, or how much they like it. If it's really hated at about 18 or 19 they will rename themselves.

The post reminded me of how a mom called their child Midnight.

Personally Midnight sounds more like a cat name in my personal opinion.

But if I do get a child I'll probably name my child something like Kira or something like that

I can't wait until we come full circle and names like Lisa and Mark are considered to be weird and embarrassing names

    sounds kinda pretentious

I agree with Somenormie. Giving kids odd names exposes them to more teasing and ridicule than normal. Kids are cruel enough to each other. And obsidian is a black shiny rock that breaks easily, so why would you want a kid to identify with that?

    Obsidian Scarab

Unusual names like Obsidian could warrant negative attention or potentially teasing from peers. In other words giving a child a very unusual name can also give the child negative affects, some cases but not all they can for example hate their name.

Now this isn't to discourage you to give a child a name as a name can be unique depending what you want. I'm all for it and wish you the absolute best in life even when you do get kids :)

However, to avoid the child getting bullied you're better off with the name Sid or Diane then again that's my opinion but I don't have any children of my own yet.

Obsidian? Try this. Call it outside, loudly, several times. Imagine a roll call, and the name "Obsidian" is called, and a hand is raised. Imagine a job application, and the interviewer says "Obsidian"?
That's the test for any name, quirky or not. I think a unique name's a good name, but as Somenormie said, it could warrant negative attention from his peers, and be hard to spell, especially when they're young.

Hope they aren't gingers or wildly caucasian with a name like that lol

Only cool names you can find are royalty names. Like Constantine and Reginald.

Naming your kid after a rock or glass is just cringy.

    Atticus could work to.

I quite like it. He'd have to be black though.

I love the stone. I collect rocks and have a few obsidian pieces. I don't think I would name a kid that, but I don't think it's weird.

Calling obsidian a rock is like calling granulated sugar, syrup.

      • howaminotmyself

Not really, syrup is a liquid, not a solid. When people aren't aware that obsidian is what forms when lava cools, you have to dumb it down to a term they are familiar with. I suppose I could have called it glass instead but I think that would have caused confusion.

I meant it in a technical way. As in both contain sugar but how they are formed is different. I dont like considering glass rocks even though its roughly the same thing. When glass has different material properties over stone. Obsidian is just a rare natural glass that comes from magma but that's pretty cool *joke*

Did you think the average reader here would have picked up on that? I generally don't like such a generic term. It's like dirt, not really a meaningful term, but (most) people know what you mean.

And I don't like considering volcanic glass, glass either. Just call it obsidian...or lava rock.

Based on this post, you have the intelligence of a rock.

I'm joking. The name still sucks, though.
