Do you believe prayer helps?

Just curious to find out if any is it normal users have experienced a time in their or a loved ones lives where prayer got them through something.

In my own experience there have been a few times where I've prayed and in some strange way my prayer was answered.

I remember getting a relaxing high after prayer as a kid. Prayer is comforting, and that's the only evidence of "help." But I have nothing against those who believe otherwise.

    • It's very cathartic, there's just a sense of some deeper connection with yourself and the energy that drives life.

At the very least, it's not gonna hurt anything.

I think that hoping is a kind of prayer.

Some call it prayer, some call it meditation. Whatever it takes to help you deal. It is all about how you personally cope with the hard times. This is why it annoys me when people pray for material objects. That won't work.

Whats the harm in a little faith and well wishing?

My one and only religious experience involved the thought of prayer.
We were in a hurricane and had just been turned upside down for the second (of 3) time and the boat was full of seawater about waist high.
Water was pouring in through a missing hatch and I took an instant to speculate whether that was the moment for prayer.
No time for that stupid shit was my decision, and I got to work saving our fucking lives.

I am an atheist and I would never nullify what other people believe in (except if religious people sound obnoxious and closed minded)

I believe that praying helps but it's not because any of the deities "answered" the prayer. I believe it helps because you are actually talking about what bothers or ails you and thus lifting off a huge burden from your shoulders. If you choose to connect your prayer to a god, then more power to you. Keep your faith strong and positive things will eventually happen. If your mindset is right

    • I didn't necessarily say I believe in god, but maybe I should have wrote that in my post, it seems to be everyone's focus, oops!

Sometimes I believe in something but other times I don't believe in anything. I've never read the bible or gone to a church other than for bible school and even then it was mostly food and game oriented. Just naturally as a child I made up my own explanation for things and god was kind of like my invisible friend, which really I guess that's all god really is.

Praying has been shown to relax, comfort, and increase in humans. Unfortunately it also makes them underestimative, which leaves more vulnerablability. Other then the psychological effects, there is nothing else that comes from praying.

Prayers are a form of meditation, so it can help relieve those who are stressed.

If you pray in the sense of meditation, i.e. thinking about life, your place in it and so on - sure, it can be helpful. If you are trying to communicate with your imaginary friend - no.

I am an atheist but said yes. As RawSodium said, it is comforting for you personally to "talk" to someone and unburden yourself, so yeh it helps. The only problem I have is saying your prayers have been answered...I could go to town with you on that one...but I'll lay off today. Its just so self-absorbed. If my prayers had been answered, I'd think wtf there's people with worse problems than me, why don't you fix the poverty and starvation first before you get to my problems.

    • Well I was raped I prayed for strength and I got through it. Sorry I didn't realize I would have to clarify that I pray for others going through difficult times as well as my own difficult times.

Humans adapt. You got through it because you adapted and became a stronger person. Not because of a prayer. Give yourself a little more credit

        • I do but I felt pretty alone in the universe, talking to that silent entity gave me a feeling of purpose and healed my own doubts in my existence. I guess the child in me still believes in miracles and the possibility of another form of energy that created everything wonderful in this life, it's like believing in Santa it makes you feel like Christmas was something magical.

I am sorry you went through something so awful. My problem is with "god." I am glad your prayers helped you.
