Do you believe smoking weed can cause anxiety issues?

Can smoking weed cause an anxiety disorder or does it help with anxiety?

I'm 24f and I used to smoke weed often when I was a teenager for recreational purposes. I started getting anxiety problems around the age of 16 which is around the age I was starting to smoke weed.
I have an anxiety disorder I have come to realize.
I did it like heaps for a while then I would smoke it occasionally ....I'm also quite a sensitive person so I feel a lot to me is probably nothing much to someone else just saying.

It can cause anxiety (paranoia, or over thinking situations) and it can help anxiety (take your mind off worries or put them in perspective). I don't think it normally would cause a disorder as in continued anxiety when you're not using it, but everyone is different so it may be possible.
Erowid is a good unbiased site on drug information.

I have General Anxiety Disorder and have tried a few meds that turned me into a zombie. I lost all my feelings and personality.

Now you know that, lemme tell you why it's relevant.

I smoked a snit ton of weed as a teen. Like all day every day until I was 21. Then I met my wife and she likes to talk while high and I don't and I wanted it to work so I quit. That was many years ago!

So I always used to smoke hash back in the day and my wife persuaded me to smoke a spliff with her made of green to relax me because I was at the start of a mental breakdown (I didn't know this then) and she thought it'd relax me. Hell no did it relax me, for about 5 hours I was in full mental disaster mode. Like my mind automatically jumped to the worst case scenario about anything so I didn't do it again.

Fast forward to the meltdown and the docs gave me these pills that at first made me happy and calm and functional, but as time went on, they stopped working so they upped the dosage. This stole my personality completely and worried my wife tremendously so I weaned myself off the pills (don't do this, go through your doctor, it was horrific) and studied what I could about cannabis for anxiety.

Basically what I found out, in my own personal case, is there is a substance that must be contained in the green part that triggers my anxiety really badly, however, I can now smoke any kind of hash or extract with no problem. I used hash to help me against the insomnia, help me relax after work, and any bad days.

I told my doctor and psychologist what I was doing and the doctor told me I was an idiot, but my psychologist was really supportive although he admitted he didn't know anything about medical cannabis other than the Americans had just started using it.

After 2 weeks I went back to my doctor and demanded paperwork to say I could go back to work! I now no longer see my psychologist who is a top guy, but couldn't help me, and live a semi normal life.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not cured, and I don't abuse it all day every day like I did in my teens, but if you find a way to USE it as a medicine, it's amazing.

Look into Indicas vs Sativas, microdosing edibles and THC & CBD ratios for anxiety. Hash has a higher ratio of CBD and CBN than bud which also helps anxiety immensely.

I'm actually having a bad day today so I'm off to skin up ;)

Feel free to send me a PM if that's a thing. I'm fairly new here so dunno lol

Oh yeah, my disorder wasn't caused by cannabis by the way. My mind got that stressed out for that long a time it refuses to totally relax, like being in the edge of a fight or flight response 24/7. It's exhausting when I'm not in control of it, but if you truly do have a disorder, you can get control over it! Sometimes for months at a time, just learn to do what makes you relax.

I think it's more likely to be an independent problem, but there is indeed a chance that your past usage may have increased your chances of developing your current condition. Anxiety is generally reported as a possible side effect of cannabis, as well as paranoia, dizziness, fatigue, mild cognitive impairment, vomiting and hallucinations. Long-term effects are not well known, but some correlation has been observed with anxiety disorders, dependency, depression, early onset schizophrenia, long-term cognitive impairment and other conditions. It's not certain these problems were caused specifically by cannabis in these studies, as correlation does not imply causation, but it's a possibility. In any case, feeling guilty about past drug usage or abuse won't help you. I recommend looking for a psychiatrist and/or psychologist to treat your anxiety, whether or not your use of the drug had anything to do with your current problems. Considering you are not addicted right now, the treatment is probably going to be the same in any case. Either way, best of luck.

If you don't have a disorder it can relax you. But weed is a dissociative drug, if you have an anxiety disorder smoking often makes it worse

    • That's the thing, it used to relax me and I loved smoking it. As I got older I started to develop anxiety and it just got worse in time but I'm not sure if it was smoking weed that caused that?

I haven't smoked in years but I always feel anxious and get anxiety attacks :/

From my understanding weed can't cause chronic anxiety, however it can cause you to be anxious in the sense that you feel that way while high and residually for a good while afterwards. Additionally it is altering your brain chemistry and in that way could bring up some latent anxiety. Weed has the effect of bringing up parts of us we maybe don't want to see. But in order to still feel anxious you would need some predisposition to anxiety anyways. Weed alone cannot cause anxiety attacks years later from my understanding. In your treatment I would not bring weed into consideration

If you haven't smoked in years then your current anxiety has nothing to do with weed. I reckon nicotine causes far more anxiety than weed, but different people react to any drug in different ways.

        • I thought people smoke ciggies to help with stress?

What you're saying is that nicotine causes anxiety/increased stress? o.O

Indeed. The person may feel some relief after smoking, but they may also feel anxiety thanks to it, due both to the addiction and to other collateral effects.
