Do you consider yourself smarter than average?

Here’s a very stupid and difficult question to answer because 30 million factors are involved.

But! Do you consider yourself to be a generally smart person?
When you think of the word “smart” and what is means to you, do you think you do “smartness” better than the average person?

Yes, I am ‘smarter’ than the average person 38
No, I am not ‘smarter’ than the average person 15
I don’t want to cooperate 9

Yes. I'm not saying I'm a genius or anything but I've known many incredibly stupid adults. There had been a few times I've definitly been the smartest person in the room and I'm around average intelligence. That's bad.

I didn’t use to get vaccines because I wasn’t afraid of getting sick lol, I just assumed I’d beat whatever I could get hit with.

Then my nephew moved in with me, he has an immune system disorder and isn’t able to handle getting vaccines. I wasn’t going to let myself be a huge hazard in his life so I started getting vaccinated for his sake.

That’s why I think it’s a good idea for everyone to be vaccinated so they aren’t a danger to those who can’t protect themselves

Depends on the room I'm in. In a room full of Harvard graduates, I might feel really dumb and lacking in the intelligence area. But I've also been in rooms where I've been laughed at and called a nerd for using the word "palette" in reference to taste. I couldn't wait to get out of that room.

    Define smartness.
Smartness in verbal reasoning? I'm above average by a long way.
Smartness in number skills? I'm about average; maybe a little below my peers.
Smartness in organisational skills? I'm rock bottom.

My skills are really imbalanced, so to some I'm super smart and to others I'm a Class-A Idiot.

Intelligence has many factors. Smarts and intelligence aren't necessarily the same thing. I view intelligence as being able acquire knowledge and smarts is the ability to apply that knowledge.

Geniuses aren't, by default, smart. Some are quite the opposite. If you do nothing with your quick thinking and ability to calculate on the fly, you are not smart.

I believe I am smarter than average. And most who know me will agree. But that isn't aiming very high.

But it is wise to remember a quote by Einstein, "If you judge a fish's intelligence based on its ability to climb a tree it will go his whole life believing it is stupid."

Based of how I define it, yes. Definitely smarter than average. Not in certain areas of course but it all depends what you value.

How I define it is more so ability to learn or understand things easier, as opposed to just what you know. In the past whenever I have focused on learning something it comes to me very easily I just usually lack motivation. So people like my older brother spend 3-4 hours a day studying and got a 0.1 point better in high school I still consider less smart than me because I barely ever studied and even just skipped assignments if they weren't worth a lot of points or whatever. So in general, a very lazy person but not at the gym or in bed :)

Man I used to work my ass off to get my 4/5’s. I remember spending /hours/ at the kitchen table while my sisters and brother did circles around me in school. My brother never studied but that dude was a genius, threw it all away in the end. I was not made for that scholarly life though lmfao

Me neither brotha. I am straggling through college with a super easy major. But in high school I studied for a test like once or twice ever and still almost never got C's or less. 26 ACT too without studying a lick, which is well above average. It feels weird tryna flex about this shit because I haven't accomplished anything with my intelligence. I know how to lift weights and a solid deal about nutrition and that sums me up. What you work hard in you get good at and for my entire life after 16 or so that's has been the gym.

Below average. Yikes. Learned that quickly and harshly as a child. But I’m a workaholic and I build valuable bonds with people easily, so that makes up for it. I cover my shortcomings very well haha

I’ve been told I’m highly reliable and I was always picked first for any sporting or group activities when I was young.

But whenever it came to making decisions or coming up with ideas I had to hear “Listen Dyat.... you know we love you... but-“ and I learned that maaaaaybe this whole ‘thinking’ thing isn’t for me lmfao

Yes, I wouldn't come out and say this without it being relevant, but I went to a grammar school in the UK where you needed to be in the top 5% on a mix between an IQ test and learnt curriculum to get in.

Hmm :/. I went to a grammar school too. The 11+ entrance test wasn't fair, imo. The thing was, if you went to a private tutor long-term (like I did) and learned how to answer the super-specific question types and built up the requisite skills, you had a considerable advantage over everyone else. You could be a dunce at school, but still be able to pass that very specific entrance test.

        -
      • bigbudchonga

The entrance exam has an IQ test built into it; if you went to a tutor for ages then you could get the curriculum bit down (a lot of the Asians in my school did that) but I know that Peterson, a clinical psychologist and lecturer of psychology at the best university in Canada says that no matter how hard you train at IQ tests, you can't raise your score than more than 5 points.

People can be smart and do dumb things then it's a matter of maturity (or rather; the lack thereof):P I think a much better noble way to be thought of is not as a smart ass, but as someone who's wise. Being wise is more practical, it means you can help those who are smart to get smarter because you've already been through the trial and error

I think your perception of your own intelligence depends mostly upon who you interact with. We naturally compare ourselves to others, and so your specific "others" become the standard.

So I think the answers that most people give will say more about their place in the world than it would about their actual intelligence level.
