Do you find strabismus (lazy eye) to be unattractive in a person?

I had it for most of my life until I got surgery. I always thought it was unattractive. The only reactions to it would always be negative. Often times people thought I wasn't looking at them, which caused problems.

Yes, it is unnatractive. 635
No, it makes no difference to me. 1011

Well, of course it's not attractive, but it doesn't necessarily make you ugly. We all have parts about our body we don't like.

Try not to let it influence your self-esteem too much. Try to balance it out with your positive qualities. I'm sure you've got plenty of physical qualities and personality traits which are attractive.

I don't have it anymore, not where it's noticeable. But it caused serious problems. I remember trying to talk to people before and they wouldn't respond because they thought I was looking at someone else. This even happened at a job interview once.

That sucks. But hey, think of all the stuff you're capable of now you don't have strabismus anymore. If you've managed to deal with all that for so many years, there's probably a lot more you can do. :)

I still technically have it, though so very slight that it's unnoticeable. From what I was told, it sometimes takes two surgeries to get it all the way fixed. I never knew until I was older that not everyone saw double. I still see double, all the times, and I am curious what it's like to see just one picture with both eyes. I still find it hard to believe that's even possible though. I'd like to experience it. Hopefully the VA will pay for this second surgery.

I hope so too. My brother used to have something like you, and surgery helped a lot. If you get the money for an operation, or if you move to a country with free health care, your situation will probably get a lot better. In the meantime, try not to be too much encumbered by this. Take care.

I used to be VERY self conscious about it, but now it doesn't bother me at all. Surgery #1 made it look as though I'm looking at people now, so that was 99% of the problem. Now, hopefully my future surgery #2 will make things perfectly straight.

In some pictures of Paris Hilton you notice that she has a bit of lazy eye. It bugs me that she has millions of dollars for her everlasting shopping but doesn't bother paying to get her lazy eye fixed. Hmmm maybe she thinks she doesn't have lazy eye.

Apparently a few celebrities have it. I didn't even know about the surgery until I was older. I really, really wish my parents knew about it when I was younger (assuming they didn't), and got me the surgery. My life would be radically different I'm sure.

In all honesty, if it's a person who would be unattractive without the lazy eye, it emphasizes their unattractiveness. But, if it's a person who would be attractive without a lazy eye, the eye doesn't affect their appearance.

I believe that. BUT, would she have looked better if she didn't have the lazy eye?

Is there any age limit on having the surgery ? I've been told its best to do it when you're young .

I don't think there's an age restriction. I'm sure it's best to get it done as early as possible though. I got strabismus surgery done when I was 26. I really wish my parents had got it done for me when I was younger. Growing up, social situation were often times very awkward because people thought I wasn't looking at them. Including girls, which made it hard for me to get a date, plus the lazy eye was unattractive. It certainly affected me. I didn't know until I had the surgery that it's not normal to see double. I thought everyone did.

I've got a really bad lazy eye, apparently too bad for surgery :( Most of the time it's actually looking straight into my nose, loads of people ask about it, and I don't know what to say.

If it's looking at your nose, is it cross-eye? Lazy eye is when it looks opposite the nose.

Even though I've had a lazy eye my whole life, I always found it to be creepy looking and made people uncomfortable. Cross-eye, on the other hand, is kinda cute depending on the person.

I hate it :( If I see someone I like, I can't make eye contact, which is really important.
I also can't see 3D movies, or look at someone for 10 seconds without my eye drifting towards my nose... Sometimes you can't see the pupil!

Have you considered surgery? If they have surgery for lazy eye I imagine they have it for cross-eye. I'm sure it's the same principle. There are muscles on both sides of the eye, and if one is stronger, it will cause the eye to drift to that side. With surgery, some muscle is taken from one side and put on the other to even out the muscles.

It's much more common when people are tired.

I only notice it initially but when I talk to someone regularly I don't notice - even when I talk to a few pals who have glass eyes.

One girl with a glass eye had no car seatbelt on and went through the windscreen, lots of lumpy scars on her face too :o(

    One guy was beaten up.

I think a glass eye still moves though doesn't it? I don't know much about glass eyes. Do they move as if looking around?

No they're fixed straight ahead, the other eye moves independently.

I'll be honest... yes. It's unattractive.

I don't see the point in sugar coating it or lying.

I agree that it's unattractive, even though I had it. Apparently, at this point in the poll, 32 people think it's unattractive and 23 say it doesn't matter, but I'm willing to bet some of that 23 may have not known such people or not been interested in them.

I won't say that it's completely unattractive, but it is a little distracting for me personally though. I am sure I would get used to it though, and after a while I probably wouldn't even notice it anymore.

I never knew the woman from Amélie had it. She's got such a slight case of it though. I'm mainly talking about when it's all the way on the side.

  • I have a very slight lazy eye or so my mother tells me that's what it is. One of my eyes is however smaller than the other one but no one notices.

I remember when I was at High school, the class was discussing strange things about themselves and I mentioned my smaller eye. I had to take my glasses off and they looked at me until they noticed. They'd never noticed before then XD
