Do you fully digest mushrooms?

I LOVE mushrooms (not the magic kind, the kind you eat for food).

Anyway, I always find undigested mushrooms in my poop (I get diarrhea a lot, so....that's why I can see it). Some are whole, some are large chunks (depending on how I prepared them), but still, undigested.

Is this normal?

Are you sure it isn't just mushroom tip impressions on your poop?

Well, a fungus's cell membrane contains ergosterol instead of cholesterol. I'm thinking we don't have the correct enzyme to break that down...like cellulose in plants (I'll find the corn shell in my poo). I'm too lazy to look it up but that's just off the top of my head.

I don't know why this post disturbed me.

It's totally normal! Every body works different, I've been working in the cullinary world, and foods are quite tricky if they are made wrong or not. Like raw goes trough normally, but I believe the amount of fat added to the mushroom affects your digestive system to grab the nutriens out of the food. Not a big problem

as for collard greens, some people just find cruciferous vegetables too much for their stomach. A great alternative is green leafies. light and much more gentle.

Cook the Mushroom, and it will break down the outside wall of the mushroom. This will make it much more easy for you to digest. Also chew your food 40x per mouthful.

The walls of mushrooms are made of cellulose, a dietary fiber that is the main component of most indigestibles like corn. If seeing the shrooms disturbs you, you may want to chew a bit more thoroughly (it'll still remain undigested though).

Actually, fungal cell walls are composed of chitin, not cellulose. Cellulose makes up the cell walls of plants and requires bacteria and long fermination for animals (cows and other herbivores) to actually digest. A study from about 10 years ago found that 20 of 25 subjects had chitinase (chitin digesting enzyme) in their gastric juice. The sample size was low so it's difficult to say how common it actually is. Also, all the subjects were Italian so it's possible that it is more or less prevelant in other populations, like lactase and alcohol dehydrogenase.

I have a whole bunch of stuff that I don't digest. Mushrooms, kidney beans, red pepper, peas... I do have a problem with my digestive tract though. If you're worried, go to the doctor.

It doesn't sound normal that you have diarrhea a lot...and I don't know about the mushroom part, see a doctor.

I used to get chinese takeout steamed vegetables with chicken. It often contained mushrooms and I would eat them. When I had my waste, everything was properly digested. I don't think I've ever had bits and pieces of undigested food in my fecal matter. I don't think that's normal. Take digestive enzymes and eat authentic/organic yogurt. The enzymes and healthy bacterial should be beneficial to your digestive system.

    Good Luck.

Do you only get diarrhea when you eat mushrooms? It may not be related. Mushrooms are harder to digest so if you are having trouble digesting food in general, you will find plants in your poop.

    • No, I think I have a sensitive and/or poor absorving digestive system.

Sucks because I eat so healthy, and naturally and organic yet it seems it goes right thru me!!

I feel your pain. Have you been tested for food allergies? I have some intolerances and if a small amount is in my system it shuts my digestive system down, no matter how quality the food is.

I digest them. With me it's beansprouts, which I don't understand. I thought I'd chewed them up. Maybe they're like Terminator 2 and they reform inside me.

  • I digest mushrooms, but I don't digest lettuce.

    • That happens to me too, except mostly with things like kale or collard greens. It's like, nothing changed in the journey from mouth to poop.

I honestly can say that I have no idea. I don't usually check out my poop, just flush it!
