Do you have a band nobody else likes?

I love this one band, and to prove I'm not a giant hipster they've had some big hits haha. What I want to know is this: do you have a beloved band or singer that nobody else in your friends appreciates? If so, who are they and what songs best express the satisfaction they give you?

Yep. I have this grotty old rubber band stuck in the back of my chart table that nobody, not even my wife, likes. The poor thing just lies there, waiting for a friendly word of encouragement, but it never comes.

Sonata Arctica! Gives me chills every time I listen and never do I get bored of any of their songs. All the lyrics are open to interpretation, but they're still relatable, not to mention beautiful melodies, awesome solos, and amazing vocals. :) But yeah, nobody else I know has really heard of them, thy're from Finland anyway so. But they sing in English. :D

I totally love Luke Kelly, and that kind of Irish music in general even though Im not Irish at all. I also love Jeff Buckley ...none of my friends care about my dead singers though.
Oh yeah I really like Joanna Newsome though she is a bit strange . I like people who are weird though.

I like a lot of stuff so there's so many. I listen to mainstream and underground stuff. Most people I know don't usually share my interests in music though.

Middle Class Rut is an underrated band in my opinion. Famous for their song "New Low." They sound a lot like Janes Addiction.

I'm no fan of mainstream rap/hip-hop, but I like some underground. Like some of Immortal Technique. Whether you agree with him or not he's an intelligent and lyrically gifted rapper. He sings about things like classism, poverty, religion, government corruption, and race. I don't agree with him on everything, but I like the sound of his music and he does make some good points. His 2 more popular songs "Dance with the Devil" and "You Never Know" are some of the most powerful songs I've heard, ever! Chino XL is a similar artist. In my opinion, his best songs are Poseidon, Kreep & Fathers Day...Atmosphere isn't too bad. He's a local artist where I'm from. He keeps it real. If you've never heard of check out this song. Makes you really think about real life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoLxuyV9qz8

Sorry if I went overboard. I tend to get excited when it comes to music

  • No one but I in my circle of friends (which is totally composed of real people, not just cats and a plant named Inez) understands the genius of Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" or the music of Amon Duul II, Cecil Taylor, Patti Smith, or Captain Beefheart. I've tried to get my friends into Pixies, First Aid Kit, Tom Waits, and Aphex Twin, but so far only a few of the bands I've shown my people have got any attention from them (Neutral Milk Hotel, Nick Drake, Kings of Convenience, Miles Davis, etc.).

Neutral milk hotel is the other band everyone I know hates, nick drake too, pretty sure my brother hid my pink moon cd

      • I honestly don't understand what is so offensive about Nick Drake that one must hide cd's of his work (especially something as sparse as Pink Moon). I can kind of understand what might put someone off of NMH, though (I LOO-OOOV-EE YOUUU JEEE-SUUSS CHRRR-IIIII-II-EYE-ST.......). Wilco also didn't do very well with my friends.

Love Wilco, yeah I played yankee hotel foxtrot on a car trip once, got to radio cure before it was turned off for being " too much of a dirge "

Yes, that one band with a deep baritone voice and keyboards who is half-way between doom metal and stoner rock. Who speaks constantly of sex, death and depression. I love them way too much and nobody else does. Maybe someday I'll meet someone who likes them..

  • I like a lot of underground bands but other people like them too. They just aren't popular or on the radio.

  • I oddly like some songs in reverse which my friends think is really strange:

I've just thought, I remember you saying about liking ambient music before and if you're into techno have you heard of a band called the knife?

I'd recommend an album of theirs called shaking the habitual, really good mix of drone, dark ambient and experimental techno among other things

Some of it is a bit more acessable but if you want to check out their more experimental/drone side a cherry on top is a good track to start with

Jon Lajoie, The Lonely Island, and Tenacious D. Though no one seems to understand why.

I bump Show Me Your Genitals - Jon Lajoie when I drive down the street... it makes me laugh.

Jon Lajoie is hilarious and very popular where I live. Probably because that's where he comes from. I like Tenacious D too, when I tried showing it to my friends they didn't like it so much though.

Pretty much every single one of my favourite bands are hated by my friends and family so I'll just choose the one that's most hated, death grips, they're an experimental industrial\noise hip hop band , I'm honestly not allowed to play it through speakers, just headphones ( but in return my brother can't play coldplay XD ) despite how much I love them I can understand why people hate it.

Its hard to choose a song that defines the satisfaction they give me as their style has changed over their short career, I'll have to cheat and use two, both represent as a whole my appreciation for them,

This first one represents they're raw, brutal side, especially early on its the closest hip hop has ever reminded me of metal what with ride shouting more than producing a traditional flow, its the kind of music in play when jogging and need energy or need to wake up, its the kind of music that just makes me want to get up and wreck shit......well.....jog

This represents their deeper sound, the glitchy and deep instrumentals and the side of them that makes me want to put on a good pair of headphones and just lay down and take it all in, plus it shows their amazing use of sampling using recordings of bjork recorded just for the album and how they warp and distort samples into something else

There are three bands that I like and that I'm very surprised that they are not well known:

    Skillet

    Static X

    Bobaflex

Skillet seems to be becoming more mainstream though. They came out with a decent album "Awake" not that long ago, but that's their only album I can say I cared for. I like some of Static X too.
