Do you have a favourite art form?

I thought this was an interesting question so I thought I'd ask it even though I have no idea what sort of responses I'd get, but I reckon you're a cultured lot :P

You can choose something you like to look at/listen to/whatever, or something you do yourself. Interpret the word "art" as loosely or as strictly as you choose.

And leave comments if you want to be specific :)

2D visual art (i.e. paintings, drawings, photography...) 28
3D visual art (i.e. sculpture...) 1
Video (i.e. Film, TV...) 9
Food and drink 2
The written word (i.e. plays, poetry, novels, short stories...) 3
Music 22
Theatre (including dance, since I have no idea where it fits...) 1
Fashion and body art (i.e. clothing, piercings, tattoos...) 4
Other (I've probably left out loads of options, so comments please!) 2
I wouldn't say I have a "favourite art form". 13

I love film. I'm a sucker for a good long tracking shot. (Intro to Orson Welles' Touch of Evil comes to mind)
But I also love graphic novel art, graffiti art, traditional art. And lyricism. Meh I give up trying to choose one of the above.

Performance art, e.g. a man urinating in a cup and then drinking it onstage. Of course I can only appreciate it if there's some sort of intricate political statement/social commentary behind it, I'm not some kind of sicko.

I really can't choose. I love all art and I don't really think one form is superior to another.

2D is my niche. That's what I do and I understand it more than the others.

Music and film also come to mind. Both are artistically inspirational to me and help me form philosophies that I communicate in my own work.

I agree that food is an art, but one I do not have the means to indulge in. Although, I do try to be creative when I cook, such as with my abstract egg concoctions.

As an artist, I can find "art" in the world around me, so I guess my favorite form would be the world itself.

Hmm. It's hard to decide but I must say that graphics has always been my thing. My favourite graphician is Luigi Puiu. He has some mind blowing paintings.:)

Music *is* necessary. Nothing cheers me up like a song w/ a good story in it – then that'll eventually lead to literature as I look up the story/legend behind the song/songs; or I’ll read a great book then find out there's a song of the same name. My favourite musicians were my imaginary friends. Well, semi-imaginary, cos they *were* real, but they weren't; as in I felt like I knew them but didn't. When I use the internet it's either to find memorabilia, chat about gigs or meet up at one.

As for food & drink being an art form, I’d say it depends where you go. I've had meals that were presented brilliantly but were horrible, & meals that looked horrible but were some of the nicest I’ve ever eaten in my life.

I like sculpture but hate when I'm not allowed to interact with it.

The one I like least is poetry.

I mean you can put a refrigerator on the porch but you don't always have change for a 50, if you know what I mean.

2D all the way! I love anime. Always have and always will, no matter how lowbrow other types of artists might say that it is.

I liked it when Farmer Jeth slipped in the paint and it got all on his left buttock then he went inside for bacon and Mrs Jeth saw that he'd left an imprint on the seat that looked like Big Poppa Jeth's tattoo of a naked lady.

    Okay, in short, naked ladies.

Hmm, food and drink is an art form? Sort of interesting.

I really don't know which I'd choose. Literature, music and video all stand out. Although, I'm going to be picky and say that sometimes it's complicated. For example, most films and TV shows have a script and a soundtrack. These are important parts of it, but it feels like I'm cheating because the "written word" and "music" options are usually part of what makes up "video".

I don't know. They all offer something different and I love them all. Music and literature are probably my favourites, and "video" too, although I think that's a given, for the reasons I've already mentioned.

Doh! I forgot that music often contains lyrics, or the "written word". It seems like literature is at the core of my favourites. Although not always, since I also love music without lyrics. Essentially, I don't know.

      • I put food and drink as one because you can treat it in a pretty arty way, especially if you're a chef in a posh restaurant or something like that. If you were my food tech teacher, you would certainly tell me that food was an art form :P
I suppose I think of "art" as something that isn't a necessity, but is enjoyable because it stimulates your senses in some way. Of course, food is necessary, but most people in wealthy countries eat what they do because it tastes good, i.e. it stimulates them in a positive way, not simply because it is necessary to eat otherwise we would all eat some tasteless sludge. That was my (very roundabout) thought process, anyway :P

And yes, you're quite right that many of them contain pieces of each other. Some do it often, like film, music and lyrics, and some do it in a more unusual way. I even watched a Heston Blumenthal programme once where he made people food while watching a film :P I thought of that problem when I wrote the question, but I couldn't think of a simple way of splitting the parts up. I'm glad you pointed it out.
