When I was younger my dad and I had a decent sized garden in our side lawn. I truly miss us spending time in the garden while he taught me what different plants and flowers needed to flourish. I miss having someone close to me that is so interested and knowledgeable in the things I want to learn about.
I'm a university student. So no. But when I get my own house, i'd love to have a garden. A few trees. Some shrubs. Some flowers. Maybe even some home-grown veggies. (Since the ones at the market are crap).
There is nothing better, than firing up the grill on a sunny day out in the yard. Opening a beer and sitting in a nice chair, while looking at your garden and waiting for the food to be cooked.
There are plenty of little uninhabited islands around here, and you can go pick the fruits off the trees. We catch fish for meals and make our own electricity (solar) and water. Pretty self sufficient. Fresh fruit and vegetables are among the cheapest things you can buy, especially around St. Vincent (Eastern Caribbean). :) Gardening is awesome, but bilges + dirt don't get along all that well.... and when the boat heels over... the dirt gives in to gravity and abandons the pot. :)
Can't really grow much on a sailboat... and why bother when fruit and vegetables are so wonderfully fresh and cheap in the local markets run by the islanders?
I have plants in the back and front lawn, but I don't consider them to be gardens. When I think of a garden, I think of a quiet sanctuary that's full of colorful botany.
I live in a church and we have a communal lawn but I'm not allowed a garden. I've had my name down for a small allotment (a thousandth of an acre) for about five years but they're like gold dust here because space is so short, and I think about ten people still have to die before I get one of theirs.
this year i have a strip beside the fence, 5 tomatoes and 6 lettuces, also i threw in some cumcumber seeds, i have a 1/2 acre of land further away from here, it has 2 cherry trees, a mulberry , almond, 3 kinds of apple, a pear and 4 mature olive trees and 2 figs , i think thats all oh and a lemon , ruby grapefruit
I do! I'm big into agriculture, actually. I'm looking into permaculture and I want to create what's called an "edible forest garden" in the current patch of forest on my land. The concept is amazing!
My annual garden didn't do so well this year because of the drought and deer, but hopefully next year will be much better!
How about you?
I grow what I can. This was my first summer in my current house and I had a whirlwind of crap to deal with so I wasn't able to plant as much as I wanted. But I got raspberries and blueberries planted that should continue to produce without much effort. And hopefully next year the herbs I planted come back. And I got a couple of raised beds built for veggies. I live in the city so my soil is a bit questionable but I'm working on some good compost. Actually, the soil is terrible.
I do want to integrate some permamaculture into my garden but I'm not going to be anal about it. I like that more people are learning about it and putting it into practice. Are you familiar with companion planting? There are two great books on the subject: "Roses Love Garlic" and "Carrots Love Tomatoes."
