Do you look a person in the eyes while talking to them?

I find it that more and more people are starting to say it makes them feel more uncomfortable then good that the other person seems to be actually paying attention. Why do people have a problem with that?

lol I have read many times in the newspaper n stuff to make eye contact...or you wont seem interested .....

lol and i really tried it to make friends and it made me more consious...Infact i think it feels more awkward n weird..to look into people eyes deliberately....just bcos u may seem uninterested But u r aware of the fact that u have to do this to maintain better relations....Its kinda unnatural ....doing it purposely..i think what matters is to be natural rather than showing your eyes like this O__O to people "Yes i m looking at you" haha
...It would feel like a psycho...what matters is to be natural and to genuinely take interest if you like the person...rather than faking which would make it awkward...

  • I think that people are beginning to feel more and more uncomfortable looking people in the eye (like you said)

With all of these new inventions such as facebook, email, and text messaging, or way of communicating is becoming more and more virtual.
Nowadays if you want to tell someone something, you don't have to speak to them you can just type the words and they will read it. This can ruin social skills, as we forget how to really deal with people when its not in front of a screen (i.e. in real)

Wow, I totally agree with you. I think we are finally starting to get a little advanced for our own well being as humans. Some of its good, but most of the "social" technology is very unneeded

  • Please note that I am not pointing out any specific person/commenter:

Often times people dont look others in the eye if they feel intimidated or have a lack of self-confidence.

I know I've done that before.

    I'm probably stating the obvious...

I DEFF DONT! I try to but I cant. When I try, it makes me feel weird and awkward so I look away or look at their mouths..

It depends. I know some people find it rude when you have wondering eyes during a conversation or whatever, but it does feel awkward sometimes looking and getting looked at for too long.

No matter who I'm talking to, I look mostly into their eyes. I say mostly because, my eyes may drift down towards their nose or mouth or something stupid like that for a sec, but mostly into their eyes. Or even when someone is talking to me, I look mostly into the eyes. I do this not to catch their attention, I do this because I just do.

When someone just looks at my face for too long i freak out. I can't handle eye contact. I always feel as if they're scrutinizing my face. Looking into others' eyes also makes me feel strange and unnatural.

I always look people in the eyes. I absolutely HATE it when people get all fidgety and stare at the floor.

no not really especially since i'm a little shy. I mentioned it to my friend one time about talking with someone while looking in their eyes. So my friend and I tried it but we just both bursted out laughing for some reason...probably cuz we're idiots :P

i used to ALWAYS look people in the eyes, but now if they can't do it at least a little back to me, then I assume that eye contact in general makes them uncomfortable.
    That's for friendly/casual stuff.
Business affairs I ALWAYS ALWAYS look in the 'ol peepers.

  • Depends on the person. With some people I'm fine to look them straight in the eyes. And with others I don't dare look for more than a second.

I typically do both. When I feel like being intimidating I'll stare them down and let them fidget, otherwise I'll casually look away.

It is good to look eye to eye if you are speaking to the person or vice versa. Most young people don't because they feel shame, the reasons why they feel shame could be many. It is actually disrespectful not to look at somebody at their eyes when they are talking... people who have confidence, are happy, rich, famous or even clever, always look eye to eye when they talk.
Check the attributes of some great historical figures for example...

...but i tend to level it out with a bit of acting lol thats what most of us do right? When your thinking you look somewhere else, you hear someone shouting in the background or even a little itch on you arm or something. That way it wouldn't be weird or disrespectful but it could actually be quite fun!!!

i think naturally you actually look at the person's mouth when they are talking to you.
if im talking to someone i don't know very well then sometimes i feel awkward looking right at them so i tend to look away sometimes. on the other hand i always look a friend in the face..maybe not the eyes it could be a bit unnerving..
though when speaking to someone it looks rude if they are not looking at you, like they are not paying attention.

I quickly look them in the eyes then stare down at their shoes or to towards the background. It makes me feel uncomfortable. Now, with friends, it is a different story. I can look them straight in the eye. Perhaps it's because I know them well.

Yup, I always look people in the eye no matter who it is,boy/girl.It depends though if they are looking back then yes I would look back at them if they're not looking while talking then I won't look at them in the eye.I especially like looking into a girls eyes to see if she is full of confidence or not. Especially if she is fine as h*ll then I will look right into her eyes to see if she in interested or if she is nervous or not. I don't look at people in the eye the creepy way though, that would be weird.

The eye is the window of the soul, the mouth the door. The intellect, the will, are seen in the eye; the emotions, sensibilities, and affections, in the mouth. The animals look for man's intentions right into his eyes. Even a rat, when you hunt him and bring him to bay, looks you in the eye.

  • I'm weird.. generally I don't look but then I think I'm creeping them out.. or I'll just stare really defiantly.

Depends on the person I'm talking to. I tend to look my friends in the eyes but not for example my teachers. I still try to be polite however, and look as often as I feel comfortable with.

how they hell do you not? that would look fuckin retarded... i mean you don't have to stare them down or anything, it just make you seem more sincere... if ur shy it's ok anything else it's kinda weird...

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Most people under twenty five are so developmentally retarded that they can't relate to others as real people. They are so into Facebook and non-human interaction that they don't understand the importance of paying attention and looking people in the eye.

I see them texting at crosswalks and run them over.
