  • You gained 40 bucks, but how much did you lose before you gained that 40 bucks? This is what I find funny with people who gamble, always the first ones to say "Oh I won x amount!!!" and then I think, but how much money did you lose total?

    • :) I do win 20 and/or 30 bucks many times actually, I only pay like... 10 bucks or so.
But some days I payed 10 and won 0.
It's a dangerous game, but when you win, you feel yourself special. :)

He won 40 on a $2 scratch off.

No, gambling is not for me.
When you think of all that pooled money and how slim the odds of winning really are, it's no wonder people call the lottery a (voluntary) tax on stupidity.

I don't like games of luck. I like to play something I can influence. I'm like that with cards. All my favourite games are the ones where, whether you're dealt a good or bad hand, your strategy for dealing with it is the key. It's also why I like chess. It's zero percent luck and, if you win, it's purely down to your own efforts.

I'd love to learn to play chess! I need someone to teach me though!

It's a shame you don't live here. I'd happily teach you. If only to have someone to play. People here refuse to play with me and I'm not even that good.

Best advice I can give you is to learn with another person as opposed to a computer. I like playing against the computer but it doesn't have any creativity and I'd have lost out if I learned that way.

Yeah, I tried to learn by reading up on it and by trying to play on the computer but it just doesn't sink in, I really need someone to teach me 1 on 1.

I think I'd be good at it because I love strategy. You might laugh at me for using this as an example, but I'm awesome at checkers and I can do the craziest things on a checkerboard, it just comes so easy to me. I can almost 100% of the time either beat someone so badly it's embarrassing or lock up the board so no one can move. It's like the moves play out in my head like a choreographed dance. I can see 10 moves ahead for both myself and my opponent. It's fun! Fun for me anyway, but I can't really get anyone to play checkers with me anymore!

I wouldn't laugh at you for that. I think you'd probably be a better chess player than I am. Chess is all about strategy and looking ahead. It's about assessing your position, assessing your possible position and working out how you can conceal your intent. Like checkers but with more options. I think you'd get a lot out of it.

If I was a better player, I'd suggest playing you on Yahoo! Chess or something, where you can play people from anywhere in the world and have a discussion at the same time. It's a good teaching medium. But I honestly think I'd be doing you a disservice because I have to think hard. It's not instinctive for me. And I think you'd be an instinctive player who would beat me every time if you were taught to obey your instincts. I hope you do pursue it, though. It's a game where, the better you get at it, the more you get from it. The proverbial gift that keeps on giving.

Anyone ever play the luck game where you crap on an officers hood to see if your lucky enough to get away? It's a classic.

Gambling for fun is fine, but gamblers are like drug addicts.
    They're losers.
No, I don't have any sympathy for them.

I've had pretty good luck gambling. I don't do it often, but I do enjoy casinos and lotto tickets here and there. I've won somewhere in the low thousands overall. I went to Atlantic City a couple months ago and won about $350 (I only put $20 in the slot machine....), and I won $40 on a $2 scratch-off ticket a couple weeks ago, so that's not bad. I try to keep it to maybe once a month and $10 to $20 or less that I do any kind of gambling.

You mean the lottery? Chances of winning is way too small for my tastes.

If more people won but they won less money then I'd give it a go.
