Do you prefer pen and paper...or technology?

At work...my colleagues and I each get a rota for our work load for the week. All my colleagues (they're in their 40s & 50s) use an iPhone to view the rota...I'm in my mid 20s and I like to have a print out of the rota rather then use a phone.

Does anyone else find situations where they prefer to use the 'original' method like paper rather then using phones for everything?

I like paper way better. I always carry paper and a pen in my bag just in case I need to note something down. It never crosses my mind that I could use my phone for that.

Considering that my handwriting has degenerated to that of a five year old, my answer should be obvious.

It depends on what I'm doing.

Typing is easier for me in some ways. My hands have been shaky recently, and pressing keys requires a lot less precision than writing things out. I also tend to grip pens way too hard when I'm writing. If I'm writing out a reminder, I need to have it on the computer, unless I write it on my body, because I'll lose whatever else I write on.

On the other hand, I can't really do math on the computer. I need to write things out. If I'm writing a story, poem, essay, or journal entry, I usually prefer to do a draft with a pen first, or else record myself talking about it. It's kind of a pain, because I type much faster than I can write or speak, but if I type out a first draft, I get frustrated with myself and end up deleting everything. On paper, I can cross things out without completely obscuring them, so I can come back to them later.

Touch screens aren't the best for me. I much prefer typing (on a keyboard, etc.) or writing.

Like a roster. Comes from the Latin for wheel which kind of makes sense to me because it's cyclic. I think roster itself has a Northern European root and means male chicken (which is probably where we get rooster) but I don't know how it came to mean what it does in English.

This time last year, I went away and stayed in a lovely hotel in Wales and deliberately took no technology. While I was there I found I had the urge to write so I did it with pen and paper. Oh. My. Lord! You have never seen so much crossing out and arrows pointing all over the place and such... mess!

Sometimes when I write, I hold down Ctrl-Z to undo all my writing and then hold down Ctrl-Y to make it all reappear as a stop motion video of how I typed it. I don't write in straight lines and I'm constantly going back unpicking bits or working on things. It's like looking at ants swarming over a hill of words.

So for me, technology every time. Cut, paste, undo, and saving multiple versions of things are a God-send. Plus backups!

    • know what you mean, I generally prefer typing as its easier on the hands and my spelling can be awful at times.
Ive gone won holiday without technology...always take the phone at least because the car is bound to break down! but I don't use the internet on holiday (got a very basic phone!)

I prefer the old school writing instrument that you dipped in ink. I'm just old school.

For most things, the electronic things win out. I do prefer a keyboard instead of this tiny touch screen. But in some cases, I like to go the really old-fasioned way and use a pencil and paper, usually when I write. Writing actual words on paper might be a lot of work, but it's much better than my phone, and slightly more convenient than carrying a computer around. Besides, paper just seems to inspire so much more creativity.

    • i prefer keyboard to touch! Touchscreen phones never last with me...i only really like writing by hand if the flow of ink is good from the pen...some pens are so scratchy it makes it hard work! :)

I really dislike this new trend of doing everything with your goddamn phone. A phone should be mainly used for what it is designed for - communicating with people. Yes, there are a few actually useful applications, but I'd still prefer the 'classic' method.

    • I actually prefer talking to my friends in person, though more often I end up texting if they're not around...but when we meet up for a social they're all on their phones on the internet and I'm thinking "hello - over here! real person to talk to!" :)

Depends. I spent two years writing, almost, an entire story on paper and wished I had done it on computer first because, now, I have a bunch of loose paper that I'll never be able to transfer. I guess, I've always prefered writing with my hand, but I've become used to technology. So I really can't pick and choose.

I often use my PC when I was writing stuff because I can just delete the whole thing if I didn't like it without making a mess.

Is it bad that I haven't the faintest clue as to what a "rota" is?

It really depends. What I like about technology is that most devices have spell check or auto-correct on them, though auto-correct can be a curse at times:/

I like writing by using pen and paper but my right hand cramps so badly for prolonged periods at a time. I would prefer to use a typewriter, but there are some disadvantages. No matter how you look at it, there are both pros and cons. Digital does save paper and it makes things much easier to share. Art wise, I prefer using my computer.

Until I saw this post, I had no idea rota wasn't a word that travelled. I wonder if that means we only started using it recently (although it's a Latin word).

Hmm, maybe it's even local to my part of the country. We've always said it in my family. There used to be a washing-up rota when I was a kid to see who did the dishes.

Now I wonder if the OP is from the same part of the same country as me. Hmmm...

I can understand the switch to digital in the workplace, it saves paper. But when I'm writing or doing my art, I still prefer traditional mediums. My words flow better on paper, and while I tried to get into digital art I just felt it was lacking some intangible aspect that is present when I have a paintbrush or a pen in my hand...

I will use a mixture depending on what I'm working on. Sometimes it's easier to write a few things down for reference rather than to shift between 10 different screens on the computer. I also enjoy the physical act of writing sometimes.
